How to Create a Coaching Skills Training Outline

December 29, 2021 by Jeannie Cotter Leave a Comment

If you are planning to introduce your own life or executive coaching training program, a coaching skills training outline is the most important aspect of your program. If your program isn’t well organized, well-structured, and thoroughly planned, you cannot achieve success no matter how good your coaching is. And coaching skills training outlines help you organize and structure your program in the best possible way.

Today’s post is going to help you make your training program better. We are going to discuss all you need to know about and the steps you need to take to create a coaching skills training outline.

What is a coaching skills training outline?

Simply put, a training outline is the map of the course content you include in your coaching skills training program. It enlists where you’ll begin, where you’ll end, and all the knowledge you’ll cover in between.

Typically, the building blocks of any training outline are modules, lessons, and topics. For coaching skills training outlines, you can also use these building blocks and expand them to thoroughly explain each topic.

Each coaching skills training outline follows a framework that is systematic and conceptual that provides a roadmap for learners to see where they are going. Such a framework contains more information about each topic included in the course.

Why should coaches create a course outline?

Life coaches should create a course outline because it:

  • Helps you organize and logically structure your ideas in a way that makes sense to your students
  • Helps you include all the topics and information you want your training to cover without missing a single piece of information
  • Helps you generate ideas to create an information-rich content

Steps to create a coaching skills training outline

A coaching skills training outline plays a key role in the success or failure of your training program. Therefore, you need to invest a lot of time when creating one and follow these steps:

Step 1 – The Basics

Know your audience before anything else because your course content should be customized to your target audience. For example, if your training program is for beginners, your content shouldn’t contain advanced coaching information that is impossible for novices to grasp and understand. Secondly, you also need to decide the topic you want to cover in your program.

Step 2 – Define your coaching skills training’s learning objectives

What exactly are the coaching skills you need coaches to learn at the end of the training? It is important that your students get the idea of why they should enrol in your training program.

Step 3 – Purpose and opening

Clearly state the purpose so that your students know from the start why the course is important for them. Moreover, what will you cover to make the training program interesting and engaging right from the start?

Step 4 – Organize your course content

Organize your course by using three components: modules, lessons, and topics. You also need to clarify all the related concepts and timing.

Step 5 – Presentation techniques

How should you present your course content and what are the types of materials you should use? Is it through face-to-face workshops? Or are you planning to create a video training program?

Step 6 – Evaluation, assessment, and reflection

This step deals with thinking about the ways to evaluate your students’ performance and how much they find your training effective and interesting. You also need to reflect on the positives and avoidable aspects that you can apply to future life coaching training.

Step 7 – Put it all together

The final step is to put everything together and start working on your coaching skills training program to make it as effective, interesting, and engaging as possible.

Once you’ve done the above, all you need to do is think about how you can get from point A to point B. Consider what it’s going to take you to get to each phase of your plan. Jot them down on your notebook and before you know it, you have a workable outline which you can expand upon if you wish or just keep it as it is.
