To be a successful coach, a progressive way of thinking needs to be typically adopted. Having the proper coaching mindset yields positive results for your clients.

What is a Coaching Mindset?

The coaching mindset has to do with having the right thought pattern, the proper way of thinking to assist your clients effectively. In having the proper mindset, you will be suited to successfully offer your clients directions and guidance that will lead your clients in solving their problems and achieving their desired goals. You might have all the coaching skills, strategies, etc. to coach your client, but if you do not have the right mindset, you will be limited in the impact you make in the coaching relationship.

Five Attributes of The Coaching Mindset

You are a new coach and still trying to understand what it entails to develop a coaching mindset, perhaps the attributes or qualities listed below might be able to help you.

1. Powerful Questions – Asking critical questions helps your clients get to the root of their problems and help them achieve inner clarity and discover their own truth.

2. Active Listening – Coaches use active listening skills by repeating back what information they gathered via paraphrasing. Reflecting with accuracy shows your clients that you’re intentionally listening and it confirms you have assimilated the accurate information.

3. Maintaining Focus: As a coach, you must be capable of maintaining focus (staying in control) over your own thoughts and emotions. You have to remember it is not about you or your journey, no matter how similar your clients’ story may compare to yours. The focus should solely be on your clients’ own mission and goals.

4. Silence: Even in counseling, there is a reasonable period where the counselor stays silent and allow the client time to reflect and ponder. This is equally true for coaches, and you must allow time for your clients to reflect. No matter how uncomfortable the silence may feel, do not be tempted to fill in the space with your insights. Silence, when used correctly, helps individuals gain preciseness.

5. Feedback: Providing relevant and clear positive feedback builds trust in your coaching relationship and also enables the client to feel comfortable with you.

If you in fact want to be a successful coach, I would undoubtedly encourage you to conduct an inventory of the qualities you possess. If there are any areas that you think you require improvement, begin promptly to work on them. Know that developing an optimistic coaching mindset, will definitely yield satisfactory results for your clients.
