Coaching Tips to Get Past Burnout: Proven Coaching Strategy to Get People Back into the Game

March 14, 2010 by Jeffrey T. Sooey Leave a Comment

are a dime a dozen these days, but you need to know when to use them. There are many causes for burnout and there is a different coaching strategy for each. Even as coaches we can face this obstacle to success, and knowing how to help ourselves and others is too important to use generic coaching tips in hopes that they will work. If you’re looking for a coaching strategy to get around this dilemma, here are three that will get you and your clients back on track.

Good Coaching Strategy Involves Making and Breaking Rules

The first coaching strategy is for people who lose their motivation because of the rules they create for themselves. They say they’ve “had enough” or they “can’t keep up.” But who is to say what is too much anyway? People often use an arbitrary set of rules. And if it doesn’t match what is happening in their lives, they become overwhelmed. The best coaching tips for this type of pattern is to have your clients update their rules of what is possible.

One of the Best Coaching Tips is to Remember Rewards

Another coaching strategy is to make sure people are giving themselves rewards. If they aren’t, they will start to lose motivation. Some coaching tips to consider are to make sure your clients not only give themselves rewards, but also to make sure that the reward will be something that is actually fun or motivating. Make sure you use internal rewards where possible, as well as external rewards which are variable. One of the reasons that people are so motivated to gamble in Las Vegas is that the rewards don’t always happen. The variability of rewards is even stronger motivating drive than the “sure thing.”

Remember to Factor Physiology into Your Coaching Strategy

Another coaching strategy to conquer burnout is to look at what happens to our physiology when we don’t take breaks. There are short term and long term effects of not varying tasks. After working without a break for less than an hour, productively, creativity and IQ decreases. The best coaching tips for this type of burn out is to make sure you or your client varies logical activity, physical activity and emotional activity.

You Don’t Need All of These Coaching Tips to Succeed

Even if you only use one coaching strategy from this list, it can make a difference in burnout almost immediately if caught in time. The best coaching tips, however, are to recognize the potential causes of burnout and address them before any damage is done.
