As a life coach, do you need to take a coaching skills self assessment? Absolutely! And I will tell you why. At certain periods in one’s coaching career, it is essential to perform a thorough coaching self-assessment of one’s skills because doing so helps the life coach professional identify any weaknesses and improve on them. These weaknesses should be viewed as challenges rather than obstacles to tackle them effectively. Knowing where you are today and how you will enhance your coaching skills can develop an effective coaching process in your practice/business.
What Are Coaching Skills?
Coaching skills are those abilities or qualities required to help others in achieving their desired goals. For example, in a leader or manager, coaching skills such as adequate support, empathy, active listening, positive feedback, follow-up, and motivational skills help create a positive work environment for the employees. Therefore, it will help improve the productivity levels and the quality of work as a coaching professional; applying these practical coaching skills will help clients professionally and personally. Other examples of coaching skills include persistence, flexibility, sincerity, persistence, and supportive feedback.
Coaching Skills Self Assessment – How to Improve on Your Skills
What is a self-assessment? It is an evaluation of one’s own performance. It is the process of gathering information about one’s skills, competencies, and natural abilities. Self-assessment is also an essential tool used to identify skills, interests, and skills to make them more efficient in their professional and personal lives. When it comes to conducting a coaching skills self-assessment, it simply means performing or conducting a comprehensive evaluation of the coaching skills you have acquired throughout your coaching career and identifying areas that need improvement. Once you have recognized these skills that need improvement, you find ways to become more proficient at them. Below are ways you can improve on your current skills.
- Coaching Seminars: Periodically, attend coaching seminars or take coaching courses for self-development to improve your current skills. They are effective and a lot of times inexpensive.
- Feedback: Feedback from your coaching clients is extremely crucial to the success of your coaching relationships. Check in often with your clients to see what is working for them and what you may need to adjust. Coaches can ask their clients via a questionnaire or feedback form. For example, questions like; do your coach display empathy to your issues? Do you feel like you are being heard and understood? Does your coach provide you with regular feedback?
- Getting a Mentor: It is not a bad idea to have a mentor. Someone you trust and can help guide you in your professional career. The individual does not necessarily have to be a seasoned coaching professional, but it must be someone experienced enough to help you work through areas you may be struggling with and someone who can be accountable.
- Staying Focused – It is essential to stay focused on the topic during the coaching sessions. You can improve on these coaching skills by proactively guiding the flow of the conversation when it tends to go off track, which is a normal thing that happens.
- Having a Growth Mindset: A growth mindset likes to be assessed to see what is working and what is not. It sees errors as opportunities for learning and implementing the necessary changes. When you have this type of mindset, it will be easier to improve professionally and personally.
To improve your confidence and efficiency as a professional life coach, conducting a specific coaching skills self assessment, although not mandatory, is however highly recommended.
