Coaching Instruction for Speaking to a Group: Five Coaching Tips That Will Give You Confidence

May 9, 2010 by Jeffrey T. Sooey Leave a Comment

When you’re standing in front of the room and getting ready to present, do you every wish you had a few coaching tips to boost your confidence?  My friend Eiji Morishita just shared a few powerful tips at our coaches training seminar today.  Not only are there some great coaching tips that are easy to implement on the spot, but there is specific coaching instruction that will help you prepare.  The most valuable coaching instruction is to make sure you connect with your clients before you even start.  Here are the top five coaching tips to help you connect immediately.

If You Are Looking for Ways to Connect with Your Clients Read the Coaching Tips Below

Coaching Tips For Connecting #1:  Ask enrolling questions.  The key to this aspect of coaching instruction is to start by asking, “How many of you…?”  You always want to ask questions people will answer ‘yes’ to with a show of their hand.  Asking these questions in the beginning of your presentation will get your clients to start connecting with you.  For example, “How many of you want to find more highly motivated clients?”  or “How many of you would like more free time in your life.”

Coaching Tips for Connecting #2:  Timing is everything when asking questions.  One of the most common mistakes is poor timing.  Speakers often ask questions while they are raising their own hand, which has the potential for breaking rapport with their audience.  If someone in the audience follows your lead and raises his hand, only to find he doesn’t actually agree with you on that question, he’s going to regret raising his hand.  The coaching instruction here is to raise your hand immediately after you finish asking the question.

Coaching Tips for Connecting #3:  Watch your body language.  The key aspect of this coaching instruction is you want to make sure you are positioning yourself as the expert.  Stand in the center of the stage; feet shoulder width apart and standing firmly.  When it’s time to raise your hand, raise it quickly and straight up.  If you raise your hand timidly, your audience will probably raise it a quarter of the way you do.

Coaching Tips for Connecting #4:  When it’s time to raise your hand, raise it quickly and straight up.  If you raise your hand timidly, your audience will probably raise it a quarter of the way you do.  Or not at all.  The most important aspect of this coaching instruction is to make sure you are prepared to lead your audience.

Coaching Tips for Connecting #5:  Thank and acknowledge your audience to build rapport:  Thank and acknowledge you for showing up.  Then add something like, “The fact that you’re here means that you are dedicated to become a world class coach.  Turn to your neighbor and give him or her high five!”

These Coaching Tips Make Sense, But You Must Take Action to Implement Them

These coaching tips are easy to implement and can make speaking more fun.  The best coaching instruction is to be prepared, so you can present in way that makes the best experience for you and your audience.
