Why Sport Psychology Coaching Might Be Right For You?

June 25, 2013 by Fred Phillips 4 Comments

Sports psychology coaching is concerned with the mental part of the game. An individual can be off the charts athletically, but if their head is not right, they will never achieve as much as they should. Everything in life is a combination of the mind and the body; achievement and success in any sport relies heavily on the relationship between mind and body.

Many athletes who are serious about their success have become involved with sport psychology coaching and rely on their sessions to push their mental game to new levels. Because sports is such an integral part of our society, the field of sport or psychology coaching is wide open. Want a great niche in the coaching field? Sports psychology coaching might be the right spot for you. From there, you can find many different sub-niches where you can make a name for yourself.

You can work with specific sports – football players, baseball players, soccer players, tennis players, or others. You can work with specific positions within a sport – quarterbacks, pitchers, goalies. If there is a sporting endeavor you love, or a sport you played, or a position in which you excelled, perhaps that is your niche.

What is Sport Psychology Coaching?

As a sport psychology coach, there are many ways you can help your clients. Here are some key ways to help your clients increase their confidence and boost their performance on the field, the court, or anywhere.

  • Assess current psychology – their mental health within the sport, both on the practice field and during the game.
  • Provide checklists that help the athlete know more about him or herself.
  • Use exercises and drills to help athletes overcome low confidence or fear of failure issues.
  • Teach ways to deal with pressure situations and stress.
  • Help athletes understand that failure is a component of success. Every athlete fails, but it is the reaction to adversity and failure that determines success.
  • Review and analyze past history of competition.
  • Provide ways to mentally prepare for game situations.
  • Post-game review and analysis.
  • Continued support through emails and information.

How to Become a Sport Psychology Coach?

If you love sports and coaching individuals to succeed, sport psychology coaching is the ideal field for you. Having experience in a sport or in several sports is great, but not necessary; having a passion and desire to help others achieve their athletic best is essential. Taking a reputable and accredited coaching program will get you started in the field of coaching. Many coaching programs offer sport psychology certificates while training you to expand your skill set and perform your job more effectively. Learning through mentor coaching is recommended to get the most out of your training – mentor coaching is like an old-fashioned, one-on-one apprenticeship and provides an invaluable education.

Like sports? Were you once an athlete whose playing days are over? Or, do you just have a love of the game and a desire to help others achieve in sports? If this describe you, a career in sport psychology coaching might be the perfect choice. It is an exciting and dynamic field, with multiple niche possibilities, and a chance for personal, career, and financial rewards. What more could you ask for?

No matter how good you are in a particular sport if your mind is not in the game, you will not perform well. Sports psychology coaching will help you get into that mental state where you can perform to the very best of your ability. Helping others do this is another great niche in coaching that you can enter.
