The Psychology of Coaching: 5 Tips for Success

November 13, 2016 by Dixie Somers 1 Comment

Becoming a coach can look like an amazing and easy way to change a client’s life, move to a more rewarding career, or pass your wisdom onto the younger generation. However, there is more to coaching than teaching techniques and habits. When you begin coaching, it is helpful to understand the psychology of coaching and become an avid learner of methods of catering your lessons to an individual client.

Understand the Role of the Brain in Decision-Making

The human brain is the most complex system in the known universe. It is composed of a variety of different regions that are defined by their cortex or lobe. Within each of these regions are certain nuclei that control the production of hormones that are responsible for different emotional responses. Understanding the function of each structure can help you understand the reasoning behind your client’s response to certain stimuli.

For example, the amygdala is the “alarm” center of the brain. If your client is stressed out because of a certain situation, understanding the amygdala’s tendency to think of the “worst-case scenario” and to put the client into a fight or flight mode can help you know how to react.

Focus on positivity.

Listen to your client’s difficulties and reassure them that they can overcome this difficulty just as they have overcome similar ones in the past. If it’s helpful for them, help them come up with a plan of action and take care of one problem at a time. This will give their amygdala a chance to take a break, and the client a chance to calm down.

Empathizing with Others through Emotional Intelligence

Learning and comprehending what your client is experiencing while managing their emotions will aid in your efforts to enhance your interactions with them. The formal definition of emotional intelligence is the ability to be aware, control and express emotion with empathy in order to handle interpersonal relationships.

A brief study of emotional intelligence will increase your capacity to connect and improve your relationship with each client. For example, you must learn to balance your emotions when interacting with your client. Some situations may be tense, but if you maintain control and help the client focus on positive emotions, they will learn to associate progress with positivity.

You can also practice empathy, identifying the unique traits of each client and how their needs can be met. Meeting these needs will encourage them to trust that you know what you are doing and believe in your instruction.

Grow through the Adversity

Positive psychology is the methodology in which a group incorporates different strengths to enhance a community’s ability to thrive. This is the quintessential method in which the greatest coaches have produced extreme results from their clients.

Positive psychology develops your ability to notice attitudes and emotions that are associated with higher levels of success. For example, some clients are more curious than others, which leads them to practice your advice on their own time. On the other hand, some clients are driven by positive reinforcement and will work better under your supervision and counsel.

Educate Yourself

There are websites, schools, and gurus who teach proven methods to help better your coaching abilities. Many of these courses and tutorials are based in psychology. These methods of education will put you on the fast track to interacting successfully with your clients. You can even take a master’s in coaching psychology course at a university to know even more clearly how to best help your clients.

Don’t Just Coach, Become a Mentor

The role of a coach will put you in a leadership position. Psychologically, your clients will look to you for help, and you must know the answers to their questions. Position yourself as a leader, and someone they can look to for help. This will improve your relationship with your team and grant you the trust you need as a coach to reach success.

Coaching is not an easy task. When you utilize a psychological approach, it becomes much easier. As you refine your abilities and your relationships with your clients, remember to learn about the psychology behind each client. This is not a short-term strategy, but you and your clients will reap the benefits in the future.
