Psychological Career Counseling

March 4, 2013 by Fred Phillips 2 Comments

Finding a niche in the coaching field is becoming increasingly important as more people enter the field; an interesting and potentially rewarding niche to consider is psychological career counseling. Individuals training to be life coaches, career coaches, and executive coaches are making the coaching profession one very crowded place. That is why the search for a niche within the coaching industry is important to your own career success. Thinking of a good niche – how about psychological career counseling?

What is a Niche?

A coaching niche is a combination of who you coach, which is your target market, and what you coach. What you coach can be career, fitness, money, life, and other broad categories. As a psychological career counselor, your target market is still rather broad, as you do not narrow by gender, age, career category, or any other restricting characteristics. However, you would only work with people who want some type of psychological counseling along with their coaching, and your category of expertise would be career coaching.

Why Have a Coaching Niche?

The first reason to find a niche is because it makes your marketing more focused and easier to implement. Instead of marketing to everyone, everywhere, you only promote your coaching expertise to a very specific group of individuals. The second reason to find a niche is your skills improve quickly when you coach on a very specific topic with a specific type of person. You become an expert much faster than if you were coaching many different things to many different groups of people. The last reason to choose a niche is the most financially rewarding. Because you have this expertise, you can charge higher coaching fees as you become an expert in your field. More expertise in a faster time equals more money in a faster time! It is probably a sure bet that there are not a horde of psychological career counselors in your area – you would almost be an instant expert!

What Would a Psychological Career Counselor Do?

Like any career counselor, there would be a focus of skills assessment in your practice. Finding out what a client is good at or shows an aptitude for is an important component of all career counseling. Identifying personal goals is also a crucial element when working with clients who are attempting to choose a career path.

The psychology aspect of this niche coaching field would involve assessing personality variables, lining these variables up with specific jobs and careers, assessing personal motivation levels, and clarifying lifestyle values and preferences. As a coach, you would use inquiry and other techniques to identify, comprehend, and resolve any potential issues between a desired career and a the results of career assessment.

Some licensed psychologists provide career counseling, but this is not usually an emphasis in their work. As a psychological careers coach, you are not attempting to fix problems of the mind, you are merely presenting questions to your client which will help them see the career goals more clearly. Though you will be dealing with psychological aspects of personalities and careers, you are not a doctor, you are a coach. And what do coaches do best? They ask questions until their clients have discovered the right answers. As a psychological career counselor, you will be asking these questions in a niche that just might prove to be professionally and financially rewarding.

Having a niche will certainly be helpful as we know more and more people have gone into the coaching industry. Showing potential clients what exactly you are good at and having a focus is an advantage for every coach.
