The health & wellness coaching industry is rapidly expanding because of the surging interest in alternative medicine and therapy by individuals looking to improve their overall health. Many individuals are integrating into their treatment plans and lifestyle practices like acupuncture, naturopathy, oriental medicine, meditation, yoga, etc.
Is Previous Healthcare Experience Required?
To answer Trisha’s question and that of many others, you do not need to have past healthcare or medical experience to become a health and wellness coach, however, it is helpful.

Do I Need a College Degree to Become a Health & Wellness Coach?
Not necessarily! However, some organizations or clients do require you to have one.
To embark on a career as a health and wellness coach, the first step is getting trained. The field of coaching is currently unregulated, and as a result, coaching certification and training are not mandatory. However, in this competitive market, it is strongly encouraged that you do get trained to obtain essential coaching skills and techniques to make you effective in your new profession. My former client Trisha has a degree and work experience in education. This is great because she can apply her skills and experience as a Teacher to her coaching practice. Just like a life coach, or a health & wellness coach, a teacher supports his or her students in achieving the most out of their lives.
How do I Become a Health And Wellness Coach: Dr. Sears Wellness Coach Training Institute?
While researching training programs for my former client, Trisha, I came across Dr. Sears Wellness Institute. The Dr. Sears Wellness Institute Health Coach Training was developed by world-renowned physician William Sears, MD, and a team of experts. It is CCE accredited by the International Coaching Federation (ICF).
It is the only recognized credentialing and training program so far that does not require a degree, prior training or experience to become certified through them. However, they do have students with varying backgrounds, education, degrees, work and life experience who are able to satisfactorily complete their training. Other training providers required a health professional license and/or a bachelor’s degree in a health-related field.
