Critical Coaching Tips: Coaches Need Coaching, Too

October 5, 2011 by Dave Iuppa 5 Comments

Of all my favorite coaching tips, knowing that champion coaches need coaching too, is certainly my most favorite. It is kind of like facing and accepting an eternal truth, in action. Like what’s true for the goose is true for the gander. What’s true for the client is true for the coach. Now that is a cosmic and an eternal truth!

So what Does It Mean for a Coach to Follow the Directions of a Coach?

First it means that that coach is a smart coach more interested in getting better and more interested in truly helping their clients grow, than in worrying about looking perfect. Secondly, it means that these coaches are, in fact, better than a coaches who close themselves off to opportunities for growth.

So what are the coaching tips here?

The first of all the coaching tips, has to be to insist that your coach believes in coaching enough to have a coach of their own. Very simply, does your coach have a coach that they pay real money to, or don’t they? If they don’t, then you should be looking for a new coach. Period.

Second, get to know your coach. If they have to see themselves as a kind of god, then you are working with someone with a self image leftover from the Fifties. And you probably are not dealing with a coach that can do the most good for you.

What Can You Learn for Yourself

Again that’s not too tough. Make a personal commitment to excellence for yourself. Also encourage others to do the same. And then realize that that simply cannot be done without the benefit of having and following a coach. That is the greatest of all the coaching tips – simple as that.

Give this strategy a try and see for yourself that it works. If you liked this coaching tip, leave a comment or use the handy bookmark buttons below to share it with others on Facebook, Twitter, Digg, etc. Thanks!

    Hi Dave,

I have a personal coach and she is wonderful, effective, and knowledgeable. The reason she is so good at what she does is because she also has a coach. Yes, she pays for his services and as her partner, I reap the benefits! I agree with this simple concept and it is obvious that she has made a personal commitment for excellence. I’ve learned from her example and I am teaching others what she has modeled for me. Thank you for your “simple tip.” It is important to have a coach that “is a smart coach more interested in getting better and more interested in truly helping their clients grow, than in worrying about looking perfect.”

    Hi Dave,
I agree that we can never stop learning and improving ourselves. If we stop than our growth stagnates.
