All About ICF International Coach Federation

May 5, 2022 by Jeannie Cotter Leave a Comment

The ICF International Coach Federation was formed in 1995 as a federation of national coaching associations by professional coach Thomas Leonard (USA). Right from the onset, the purpose and goal of the organization was to advance and increase the recognition, respect, value, status, and use of coaching worldwide. Since then, numerous organizations have come on board—and each member’s mission statement speaks to its commitment toward those same principles.

The ICF has grown dramatically since that first year. It now boasts more than 25,000 credential holders and more than 1,000 Master Certified Coaches—and it continues to grow rapidly. In fact, its most recent numbers reflect a 30 percent growth in membership in the past decade. The organization’s footprint spans 161 countries around the globe; it offers several regional conferences throughout each year, and its Executive Committee meets annually at various locations around the world.

ICF International Coach Federation: Why You Should Join

Joining the ICF will benefit your coaching practice in many ways. Firstly, the Federation provides a wide variety of opportunities for professional development, such as attendance at regional conferences and biennial global leadership forums.

Its members can earn distinctions such as coach certification, specializations and designations, and Master Certified Coach (MCC) status. These are highly esteemed coaching accomplishments that serve to increase your credibility with clients, colleagues, and potential employers.

As a member, you have access to unique networking opportunities at regional conferences, leadership forums, and through other members worldwide. You’ll also receive information about career advancement, continuing education, and credentialing. For example, if you pursue ICF’s MCC or International Specialty Certificates in Coaching Credentialing program, you can gain national recognition along with advanced training and valuable industry contacts.

Credential Paths and Standards Offered by ICF

The ICF International Coaching Federation offers three main credentials: Associate, Professional, and Master Certified Coach.

The Associate Certified Coach credential has two paths: an education-based path and a direct entry. The education-based certification track requires applicants to earn a degree or to be enrolled in a program that satisfies at least three of six core courses required by ICF, as well as successfully complete ICF’s online examination. The direct entry pathway does not require any academic prerequisites but does require completion of one year’s experience and a successful application.

The Professional Certified Coach credential consists of 80 hours of classes and more than 30 hours of electives, as well as at least 500 coaching hours. This credential is only available to applicants who have already earned an Associate Certified Coach credential.

The Master Certified Coach credential requires a minimum of six years’ experience with 2,000 hours completed within three years prior to application. It also includes four courses and four electives, in addition to a portfolio submission that demonstrates experience working with both clients and students/apprentices (those individuals aspiring to be coaches themselves).

Each level of certification offered by ICF must be renewed annually; however, those who hold at least one professional certification from an accredited coaching body can gain lifetime accreditation from ICF by submitting proof of another certifying body’s standards. ICF Coaching in Organizations offers three options for credentialing: Certified Coach Associate (CCA), Professional Certified Coach (PCC), and Certified Senior Professional Coach (CSPC).

Final Thoughts

The ICF International Coach Federation benefits both individuals who wish to expand their skill set and those who want their own coaching practice to grow into a successful business.

Becoming an ICF coach means you’ll have access to numerous opportunities for professional development, as well as many resources such as industry news and research. You’ll also have access to a global network of like-minded professionals eager to offer you advice along your career path. As with any field, it takes time and hard work to become certified; but in many ways, it’s well worth it for your clients and for yourself.
