Coaching can be a challenging endeavor and any tips for effective coaching can be helpful. It doesn’t matter if you’ve been a coach for thirty years or you’re just starting out in the business, learning new and effective tips is beneficial.

7 Tips for Effective Coaching

Being a consistently good coach means you are consistently pursuing new knowledge and skills. Here are a few effective tips for coaches – you may know these, but even if you do, reminders never hurt!

Open-ended questions

Good coaching involves asking question that cannot be answered with a “yes” or a “no.” This encourages the client to elaborate on the issues. The more the client tells, the more you can help them. Using open-ended questions also eliminates most leading questions – coaches should do their best to stay neutral and not try to encourage a specific response.

Summarizing and rephrasing.

Summarizing and rephrasing shows the client you are listening, and helps you remember and get a clear grasp on the situation. This can also prompt further reflection from the client. Summarizing can help clarify and rephrasing can help the client see the situation in a new light.

Establish the desired outcome early.

Identifying the goal is one of the foundation on which coaching is built, and it is important to identify and clarify these goals as early as possible. One of the most important tips for effective coaching is to use the goal as a centerpiece of the sessions. Make it front and center and put it there early on.

Believe in the potential of your clients.

Don’t judge on past or current performance or position – judge them on their potential. See them as their dreams and goals, and you will be much more of an inspiration.

Learn many coaching models.

There are myriad coaching models available for use in your sessions. Don’t limit yourself to a few of them. Learn them all and try them as needed. The more tools in your toolbox and the more weapons in your arsenal, the more outcomes you’ll be able to find for your clients.

Reward progress.

Positive reinforcement helps to spur successful development. Sure, clients may need a kick in the butt a times, but they also need a pat on the back, too. The carrot is usually better than the stick – so give them a carrot as often as possible when they achieve a goal or reach a step toward their goals.

Seek feedback.

One of the most overlooked tips for effective coaching is to seek feedback. Don’t be afraid of it – good or bad feedback will help you become a better coach.

Good coaching is about knowledge, skills, tools, and theories. You can have all the talent in the world, but you won’t be the best coach you can be if you don’t continue to learn new tips, tricks, tools, and techniques. The more tips for effective coaching you know, the better you’ll be!
