6 Mistakes to Avoid When Starting a Coaching Business

June 3, 2022 by Jeannie Cotter Leave a Comment

If you’re thinking about starting a coaching business, there are a few mistakes you’ll want to avoid. Here are six of the most common mistakes new coaches make:

  1. Not Defining Your Target Market

One of the first things you need to do when starting a coaching business is to define your target market. Who are you going to be coaching? What type of clients do you want to work with? Not having a clear target market is one of the biggest mistakes new coaches make.

(NOTE: If you want to learn how to start your own coaching business, then check out this webinar, called “How to Start Your Coaching Business in 30 Days“  During the webinar, I’ll cover how to get your first paid clients fast and make it feel natural for you. Click HERE now to attend the webinar.)

  1. Not Having a Niche

Another mistake new coaches make is not having a niche. When you try to be everything to everyone, it’s difficult to stand out from the crowd and attract ideal clients. It’s important to focus on one thing and become the go-to expert in that area.

  1. Not Building a Platform

A platform is essential for any business, but it’s especially important for coaches. Your platform is how you’ll reach your target market and build relationships with potential clients. If you don’t have a platform, it will be very difficult to grow your coaching business.

  1. Not Investing in Your Business

Many new coaches make the mistake of not investing in their business. They think they can get by with a free website and a few social media accounts. While this might work in the short-term, it’s not sustainable in the long-term. To be successful, you need to invest in your business and create professional branding and marketing materials.

  1. Failing to Set Boundaries

One of the biggest mistakes new coaches make is not setting boundaries. When you’re first starting out, it’s easy to say yes to every client and every opportunity. But this can quickly lead to burnout. It’s important to set boundaries and only take on clients that are a good fit for you.

  1. Not Having a Plan

Finally, one of the biggest mistakes new coaches make is not having a plan. Starting a coaching business without a plan is like going on a road trip without a map. You might get lucky and find your way, but it’s more likely that you’ll get lost along the way. Before you start your coaching business, take the time to create a business plan. This will help you map out your goals and objectives and make sure you’re on the right track.

Tips on how to identify mistakes when starting a coaching business

Making mistakes is inevitable when you start a coaching business. The key is to identify them early on and correct them before they cause any serious damage. Here are five tips on how to identify mistakes when starting a coaching business:

  • Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Many new coaches try to go it alone and end up making avoidable mistakes. Asking for help from more experienced coaches or business professionals can save you time and money in the long run.
  • Be willing to change course. If something isn’t working, don’t be afraid to make a change. Trying to force a square peg into a round hole rarely ends well.
  • Pay attention to your gut. If something feels off, it probably is. Trust your instincts and intuition when making decisions for your business.
  • Keep an open mind. Just because something worked for someone else doesn’t mean it will work for you. Be open to trying new things and adapting them to fit your unique business.
  • Be patient. Rome wasn’t built in a day and neither is a successful coaching business. It takes time, hard work, and dedication to build a solid foundation for your business.

All in all, mistakes are bound to happen when you’re first starting out in the coaching business. The key is to learn from them so that you can avoid making the same mistake twice. If you can do that, then you’ll be well on your way to success.
