4 Simple Coaching Techniques to Get Your Clients Unstuck

July 18, 2016 by Fred Phillips 3 Comments

Coaching techniques are almost a dime a dozen – there are many different techniques that work and probably just as many that don’t work. More importantly, some work for some people, while other ones work for other people. Most coaching techniques are not one-size-fits-all.

Figure Out What Coaching Tricks and Techniques Work For You and Your Clients

As a coach, you are unique. Your skills, knowledge, style, and talents combine to make a completely unique coach. Your clients are also unique – every single one of them. They have different issues, goals, styles of learning, desires, obstacles to overcome, passions, and needs. Not only are you and each of your clients are unique, every one of your coaching sessions is a unique moment in time – its success or failure predicated on the uniqueness of the coach and client, and on the moods, attitudes, and feelings of each participant at that particular moment in time.

It is up to you which coaching skills and techniques work for your style of coaching, and which ones work for each of your clients.

Don’t be Afraid to Try New Techniques

As mentioned, not all coaching techniques have value or will work for your coaching style and clients. But, you won’t know until you try them out. Don’t be afraid to try new things. Just remember to ask for feedback and to periodically assess how each coaching technique works. Through trial and error, you’ll find what works best for different types of clients and for different situations and issues.

4 Simple Coaching Techniques to Get Your Clients Unstuck

Getting stuck is one of the worst feelings for a client, and consequently, it is not much fun for a coach, either. Both the coach and the client want to make continuous progress toward goals. Getting stuck means results and outcomes are not being found. You want to get unstuck!

Here are a few simple coaching techniques to get your clients unstuck:

Magic Circles.

When faced with a decision, get your client to think of circles (or, you can have some fun with it and use hula hoops or work out circles placed on the floor to represent these magic circles), Talk about what’s in each circle (the various decisions being faced), and then have them step into each circle. For some reason, this allows more focused thinking and often results in a “Hell yes” decision.

Role Model.

Have your client think of one of their role models, then ask the client what they think their role model would do when facing the same decision. Their role model can be anyone, friend, family, celebrity, sports star, living or dead (superheroes may work, but pretend role models are a bit trickier). If they can put themselves in the shoes of someone they admire, they may feel more empowered to make a decision.

Impossible Dreams.

Coaching techniques often involve digging deep into the brain of a client. This one will require patience and good active listening skills. Everyone has had a few dreams. Most of us forgot our dreams a long time ago and settled into reality. However, talking about your dreams of the past is a good way to begin talking about dreams of the present and future. Get your client to talk about dreams they had, no matter how impossible, unrealistic, or how long ago. What did they dream of becoming when they were young? This can lead into a healthy discussion of current dreams and goals.

Rewarding the Results.

Everyone likes to be rewarded from time to time. Coaching techniques that result in a reward can be used from time to time. The reward can be tangible (a gift) or just an acknowledgement of success. Don’t be afraid to reward your clients, even if the progress is minimal. Rewards are great motivator to get unstuck!

This is great! Not all coaching techniques work for all people but sometimes being general about it may work for different people.
