• Your target market is almost everyone. If you become a psychiatrist or a counselor, you market is limited. Not everyone needs a clinical diagnosis, but almost all people can benefit from life coaching and go from functioning to flourishing.

What Education Do You Need to Become a Life Coach?

As stated above, there are no educational requirements to be a life coach. You don’t need a college degree; you don’t even need to have any coach training. However, as the coaching fields becomes more competitive, education and training will become more important.

What education do you need to become a life coaching expert? This might be a better question than what education do you need to become a life coach. Here are a few suggestions for being the best coach you can be.

• If you are entering college, already in college, or plan on going back to college, degrees in counseling, behavioral studies, teaching, psychiatry, and other similar fields are great for future coaches.
• Whether you have a college degree or not, you must take an accredited life coaching program. It is best to look for one accredited by the ICF (International Coach Federation), or by some other governing body in the coaching field.
• Certification is not required, but it is necessary. The coaching program you take should lead directly to certification. A certification may be just a piece of paper, but it is a highly valuable piece of paper.
• Never discount the education that experience offers. Learn while you earn. It’s crucial that you turn your mistakes into teaching lessons. There is no education like experience!

What education do you need to become a life coach? It depends on your definition of “need.” You don’t “need” any education or training by law, but you really “need” to be trained if you want to be successful in the highly competitive field of life coaching.
