Ready for a Change? Go the ACC Certification Route

The ACC certification is the most basic of the certifications available and designed for coaches who have some coaching experience and training. As a new coach, earning the ACC certification from the International Coach Federation (ICF) is a significant recognition of your progress and achievement.

There are no laws that say you have to be a certified life coach before you can become a coach. However, some coaches feel having a certification makes them a better coach and there are also clients who feel more comfortable with a life coach who is certified.

The ICF is one of the best organizations that certifies life coaches. If you are ACC certified, the credential will ensure that you have received professional training from a program specifically designed to teach coaching skills in alignment with ICF’s Core Competencies and Code of Ethics and have demonstrated a proficient understanding as well as practical application of the coaching competencies outlined by the ICF.

How to Earn an ACC Certification

There are two different paths that a coach can choose from to earn this certification.

The ICF ACTP Path

The first is known as the ACTP path (ACTP stands for Accredited Coach Training Program). This path requires you to complete an entire ICF Accredited Coach Training Program, 100 hours of client coaching experience, and have two letters of recommendation from qualified coaches. You would need to also pay a $100 to $300 fee to the ICF.

The ICF Portfolio Path

The second method is known as the ICF Portfolio path. This path requires 60 hours of training in a coach specific area (known as Approved Coach Specific Training Hours or ACSTH). The coach will also need 100 hours of client coaching experience, 10 hours of work with a qualified mentor coach, and letters of reference from two qualified coaches. Apart from the same $100 to $300 fee to the ICF, there is also an oral exam that carries an additional $200 fee.

Features to Look for When Selecting an ICF Accredited Coach Training School

Before you embark on either path, you will need to enroll yourself in an ICF accredited course offered by a coach training school. It pays to look at certain features that will help ensure that you get the best of training. One of the features that a good life coach training course should have include a lot of practical training and not being limited to simply reading from books to understand how to become a life coach.

In addition, a life coach training course should be given by an established institution and the approach to teaching students should be very professional. You also need to check what previous students have to say and after graduation from the life coach training course, you should still get support from your school or institution. Finally, a good life coach training course should also ensure that your journey to becoming an ACC certified life coach must be such that it is always filled with joyous moments.

It certainly pays to be sure in your mind why you should become a life coach before you start thinking about getting qualified and trained in life coaching. This in turn means being certain in your mind as to what life coaching is and how can a life coach provide others with benefits that clients will be willing to pay good money for.
