What is it that management coaches do? The answer is simple. Let’s face it. We all think within the box created by our limiting beliefs or our own limited vision. It is only natural. But what if someone could liberate us from those limiting beliefs and those limited visions? That is the role of the coach. And if you are a coach and if you are dealing with not only your client as an individual, but also your client as a manager, well then we are talking about the role of the management coach.
All Managers Are Always in Over Their Heads
There is an old saying, that if you aren’t living on the edge, then you are taking up too much space. All managers are in over their heads. If they are ordinary managers, then they are over their heads because they are short in professional stature. If they are experienced managers, then they are over their heads because they are continuously pushing into the deeper water. In either case, management coaches can help. For the uninspired, the task is simpler, but the willingness of the manager to embrace your leadership can be limiting. If your client is a manager who truly pressing the limits, then their willingness to listen is great but the issues are more complex, and you had better have some great insights and advice to offer.
Coach One but Impact Many
One of the truly satisfying things that management coaches experience is the exhilaration of knowing that by positively affecting the manager, they are indirectly influencing the manager’s direct reports and all those that they impact.
Management Coaches Make a Big Difference
Management coaches make a big difference. Or at least they can. The question is if they see themselves as the coach of an individual, or a manager who is linked to a network of direct reports and all the people that they influence. If they coach the manager and their people through them, then the impact can be great and lasting. But if they fail to see or to seize the opportunity, they will limit their impact and fail as management coaches.
