Life Coach Training Accreditation: A Few Things to Note

October 5, 2022 by Jeannie Cotter Leave a Comment

Life coach training accreditation is essential for a life coaching career. Life coaching offers a lot of rewards, as well as challenges. A big part of being a life coach is one’s awareness of the self or their own personality and mindset. This is why several organizations provide life coach training accreditations that help coaches become more effective coaches. Needless to say, specific requirements need to be met before you can take the accreditation exam for any particular certification.

What does it mean when a life coach training program is ICF accredited?

ICF stands for International Coach Federation. This organization is the largest international association of coaches and is dedicated to advancing the coaching profession. ICF accreditation means that a coach training program has met the rigorous standards of ICF’s professional credentialing system. All ICF-accredited coaches are held to a high standard of ethics and competency, ensuring you receive top-quality training from an accredited program.

(NOTE: If you’ve been asking questions about ICF Certification lately, then you need to attend this webinar, called “ICF Credentialing & Coach Certification”. During the webinar, I’ll cover how you can gain an ICF Credential in a matter of months. Click HERE now to attend the webinar.)

ICF accreditation means that your coach training program has been evaluated by experts in the industry and found to meet strict criteria for quality. It is a mark of distinction that shows you have chosen a reputable, ethical program. It also gives you peace of mind knowing that you will receive quality training from experienced professionals who are committed to providing you with excellent service.

How do I know if the life coach training program is accredited?

The two most common types are state-level licensing boards and independent accrediting bodies that specialize in certifying life coach training schools and programs.

Licensing boards oversee the operations of schools/universities, both public and private. They keep track of the curriculum, make sure the teachers are qualified, and oversee student achievement. Licensing boards usually work with larger institutions like universities or large charter school chains. Independent accrediting bodies focus on education and training programs that offer certificates or degrees but not undergraduate degrees.

To be accredited by an independent accreditation body, a coach training school must meet specific standards for quality control over its curriculum and teaching methods. In addition to these basic standards, some accredited life coach training programs also require instructors to hold master’s degrees or doctorates in their field of study.

Why should I think about undertaking an ICF-accredited coach training program?

The ICF sets standards for coach training programs and certifications, which means that if you take an ICF-accredited coach training course, you’ll be eligible to become a certified professional coach. You might think, “What’s the point of becoming a certified professional coach? Well, there are many reasons why you might want to become one:

  1. It makes you more marketable as a coach. Having an ICF-accredited certification will make it easier to promote yourself or even get new clients.
  2. It makes it easier for other people in the industry to recommend you as someone who knows what they’re doing.
  3. You’ll access resources like networking opportunities with other coaches or potential clients who want coaching services.

What if the coach training program I want to do isn’t accredited?

Some coaching programs are not accredited but they are still great options. These types of programs will not be able to offer you the same benefits as an accredited program, but they also do not have the same restrictions as an accredited program.

One example of a non-accredited program would be one that has been created by someone who is an expert in their field. For example, let’s say that you want to become a life coach and you decide to take a course taught by someone who has written several books on life coaching. You may be able to learn more from this person than from a traditional course.

Final remarks on life coach training accreditation

In the end, life coach training accreditation is an essential gateway to becoming a life coach. It’s a way to measure commitment to your work and ensure you’re getting the education and support you need to make it as a life coach. It will also help you build up credibility with prospective clients, which is valuable when trying to drum up new clients, especially if you don’t have much coaching experience.
