So what the heck is Landmark Education anyway? It’s a question that is asked frequently because there are differing opinions about this organization. Some believe it is a cult while others who are devotees sing it’s praises as a dynamic and positive life changing experience.
So let’s explore the facts about Landmark Education or Landmark Forum as it is otherwise known. Landmark Forum is designed to bring about positive sustainable change in your life. It’s a powerful and intense participative workshop for large groups of people that spans a three to four day period (generally Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Tuesday evening). The workshops are guided by experienced leaders who guide the dialogue between the instructor and participants. It is NOT a lecture, therapy or motivational technology and they do not get into or introduce any physiological techniques or discussions (although some would say that’s EXACTLY what they are doing). Some also say that they are missing the boat on this while others would suggest that they are being true to their coaching guidelines. What they are good at is using social triggers to get large groups of people to do things thus the reputation of being cultish. Personally, I feel that when you are dealing with such intense feelings and with such a large group of people, there is a responsibility to manage the physiological aspect of group and individual dynamics.
Landmark Education is that it is a fantastic place to learn accountability coaching. Accountability is one of the most important aspects of coaching as I’ve come to learn through JTS Advisors. Strategy is only as good as its implementation and success is very much tied to fulfilling and honoring your word, accountabilities and promises. Landmark Education’s methodology is great at helping people get measurable results and operating in their relationships that will encourage positive communication and exchange. One caution; Landmark Education leaders will attempt to take over your life and get you to volunteer 10 or more hours per week if you let them. It’s up to you to say no (or yes if it fits your life). For the most part they are harmless to people who can do just that (make decisions for themselves).
The world of coaching is grown and there are now many choices. Landmark is certainly one of them but it might be worth doing a little investigation before you make a final commitment.

Entrepreneurs are always looking for what’s wrong so they can provide solutions… I think it’s okay as long as it doesn’t get out of hand!
Best thing my wife and I did early in our marriage. We took the first two programs together. We practice the things we learned as often as we can.
You are right about accountability.
Things like “what is, is”, “that’s a story”, and “there’s nothing wrong here” are very useful, however the latter is still hard for me.
The most important thing I learned is who I am as a possibilty. When I got that it changed my life.
By definition, doesn’t a cult have to have one person at the center? I was previously involved with the Tony Robbins seminars, and that is more of a cult than Landmark if you ask me! A fun one though!!
One of the first things they say at Landmark is “we’re not saying anything we tell you is true.”
I really benefited from Landmark in getting free from a lot of confusion in my thinking about who I wanted to be, and pretending to be. Learning to be authentic is hard work but worth it in the end when you feel you are really expressing your true self and not parroting other peoples words and beliefs. I RECOMMEND IT HIGHLY.
