Well if your goal is motivational coaching certification, you can just stop right there! That’s right. Just stop right there. Not if you expect to be a real coach. I know we all want to be the ones that make things happen, but not here. And certainly don’t take any comfort in being certified at it.
It’s NOT about Certification
That’s right. It’s NOT about certification. Heck, the fact is that you can get someone to “certify” you as almost anything that you can imagine. I mean you can get “certified” as a “motivational coach” but you cannot really motivate anyone to do anything. That is their opportunity and their challenge. So what can you do?
It’s All about Lasting Effect
Have you ever attended a motivational seminar that got you all hyped-up and one week later the only reason that you remember you attended was that you saw it on your calendar hiding underneath the remains of a coffee spill? Yes? I thought so. Well motivational coaching has the same problem as motivational seminars. It’s because while your aim is to motivate – ironically – it is not about motivation. That is because to motivate is to set into action, and the energy required to set anything into action not only comes from within, but it is controlled from within. So what about motivational coaching certification makes sense?
There Is some Sense in Motivational Coaching Certification
Certainly legitimate certification is a good thing. Just make sure you look for a solid basis in science and a consistent track record of delivering good results. As for coaching, for me there is no question there. Everyone open minded enough to admit that they can do better, can certainly do better with a well trained and authentic coach. But what about this “motivational” stuff? I believe that goes back to determining the fundamental needs of the person and formulating an plan to meet those needs that is credible to the person, and then with some encouragement igniting the spark of possibility in their heart, and then being there to assure them that they, in fact, can do it. And with that, have you not earned a motivational coaching certification?

I do agree with you!! Motivational coaching is like a motivational seminar! I have been to several, and the motivation was gone, within a short period of time.. You have to want it from within, and then find a coach who will help you through when the tough happens. It is easy when things go well and you are on a role.. but when things get tough or you hit some road blocks that “motivational coach” can step in and help you figure out what you need to do to get your self back on the road in the right direction.
Hello David,
So kind of you to take time out to write guest post for Jeffrey’s readers.
I was curious to know how one measures success in order to attain such certification as a qualified Motivational Coach please?
🙂
Dave,
Motivation is an inside job. As you say, no coach can motivate another. And, yet, there is a spark within each of us to get the juices flowing. It’s a coaches task to identify that spark and fan it into a white hot flame. Still, even with the flame burning brightly, we need a dose of motivation on a daily basis.
I believe that we’re all on the planet for a reason. Each of us has a gift that certain others are waiting to receive. When that gift is pinpointed, the motivation follows. It becomes the reason you do what you do.
