Is There Any Education Required to Become a Coach?

September 8, 2012 by Fred Phillips Leave a Comment

If you are wondering if there is education required to become a coach in you area, there is no need to wonder any longer. There answer is simple and fast. The education requirements to become a coach are…drum roll please…NONE. That’s right – no education required to become a coach. Anyone can hang out a shingle or place an advertisement online and call themselves a coach.

Can that really be – you don’t need to be educated to be a coach? Believe it – but don’t don’t pay attention to it! The best coaches are educated and certified. To become any type of coach – life, career, wellness, fitness, executive – takes knowledge and skills. Where do you get knowledge and skills? Through experience and education, that’s where!

4 Steps to Get the Education Required to Become a Coach

Many people who enter the coaching field come from careers that involve highly tuned people skills, such as counseling, teaching, personal training, business consulting, human resource management, sales, social work, and other similar professions. Wherever you come from, where ever you’ve been – this is the first part of your education – your experience. But, even though there are no laws regarding specific education required to become a coach, your next step is to move to the second part of your education.

The second part is to enroll in a good online training program. This is where you add to your existing skill base with coach-specific training and education. You will learn about coaching in general and skills that are specific to your specialization in the coaching field. Most online coaching programs also offer proficient real-world training with experienced mentors. Many courses also provide training on starting and running a business. You will earn your certifications through coaching courses and should expect to pursue training and educational opportunities for as long as you remain a coach.

The third part of your education may be to unlearn certain habits and skills. For example, if you come from the field of counseling, you most likely are adept at questioning, problem-solving, and fixing things. As a coach you need to know how to ask questions without completely solving the problem or fixing the issue. Coaches need to help facilitate the client’s own problem solving ability rather than offer perfectly gift-wrapped solutions.

The final part of a coach’s education is to coach. Coach under the supervision of a mentor and coach by yourself. Coaching clients is the best education of all – you can learn just as much from your clients as they learn from you.

Find Out How Much Coaching Ability You Really Have

Some coaching programs have assessment testing which allow you to determine your present level of coaching skill. Knowing where you stand as a coach can help you select the right coaching program or help you decide whether you merely need a weekend workshop or you require something much longer to get you up to speed as a coach.

No – there is no education required to become a coach; no legal requirements as mandated by law. However, that doesn’t mean you should skip school and open your office. Your goal is to be the best coach you can be and that takes the right education and plenty of experience.
