Is Education Required to Become a Coach Who Makes the Big Money?

September 24, 2012 by Fred Phillips 1 Comment

To answer the question in the title – technically, no, there is no education required to become a coach who brings in the big bucks. However, education is probably needed if you want to elevate your tax bracket and start hauling in wheelbarrows full of cash.

To become a coach, no education is required. You can shout out to the world – Hey, I’m a coach, come get coached by me! Rent an office, hang out a sign, get a telephone listing, start a website, and you can be a coach. However, would you spend money with a coach who has no education? I sincerely doubt it!

So, to answer the question – Is education required to become a coach who makes the big money? – and not frame it within the parameters of legality and licensing – it is a big, resounding YES! YES! YES! Get educated. Knowledge is power, and in regards to your coaching practice, knowledge is clients and knowledge is money!

Why is Education Required to Become a Coach?

Many different attributes go into making a great coach. Coaches need confidence, passion, dedication, a good work ethic, empathy, sympathy, and resolve. Add a little marketing skill, and you have what should be a good coach. However, to make this good coach a great coach, you need to sprinkle in some education.

Though there is no education required to become a coach, it is important to take a coaching program before you start your coaching career. A good coaching program will provide you with the skills needed to coach people and run a successful business. It will also provide you with a certificate. Certificates prove to the world that you are dedicated to making yourself the best coach you can be.

Once you have earned a certification, is your education over? Not by a long shot! Your education is never over. The best coaches pursue additional certifications for the remainder of their careers. They never stop pursuing knowledge and are always seeking ways to better themselves. The coaching profession is not static; it is an ever-evolving field and the best coaches keep up with the newest techniques and skills. There is a start to your education, but there should never be an end! The only education required to become a coaching genius is that you know enough never to stop pursuing knowledge.

The 3 Most important Things to Know About a Coaching Education

  • Learn from life. One of the most important classrooms is life itself. Use your experiences to help others improve their lives and careers. One of the best ways to make sure to remember your life experiences is to take notes. Just like in a classroom, taking notes contributes greatly to your knowledge and understanding. It may seem strange to take notes on your experiences, but it works to improve your coaching skills.
  • In an increasingly competitive field, education counts. You wouldn’t go to a coach without certifications, would you? Even just as window dressing, education matters, but it is so much more than appearances. Education expands your knowledge base and improves your ability to coach and help others.
  • Never, never, and once again, never, end your pursuit of knowledge. You should always be looking to your next certification, class, or program – dedication to your craft means the continual pursuit of knowledge.

There is no education required to become a coach, but there really is…get it? The law doesn’t require education, but due to the competitiveness of the field, you better get your butt in school or to a seminar or into a program and stay there for as long as you want to be a coach – especially if you are thinking big bucks!. No education required to be a coach? Hah! Hardly!

I agree totally with your article in that you can never learn to much. The more education you obtain the more knowledge you will have on that subject to coach someone else.
