Is 3 Day Life Coach Training Possible?

November 12, 2013 by Fred Phillips 3 Comments

Is 3 day life coach training possible? Is it conceivable to become a life coach after 3 days of intensive training?

Of course it is. Because the life coaching industry is unregulated, you can take three days of courses or a three day seminar, declare yourself a life coach, hang out a shingle, create a web page, and voila, you are a life coach.

But, will 3 day life coach training help you become a good coach? Even if those three days of training are as intensive as possible, is it enough to give you the knowledge and skills needed to be a coaching expert?

Of course it’s not! There is no way that 3 days life coach training can prepare you for the rigors of coaching individuals to achieve their hopes and dreams.

Why 3 Day Life Coach Training is Not Enough

Though there are some great three-day seminars, it is almost impossible to learn enough in three days to properly prepare you to be a life coach. The standard length of time for life coach training can range between a few months and two years, though many coaches do it faster. How quickly you learn the skills needed to become a successful life coach, and complete your training, will depend on your experience and level of personal development.

However, you don’t have to wait one to two years to start your coaching practice. You can even start it before you begin your training; however, it is far, far better to get sufficiently trained before you start calling yourself a life coach and begin looking for clients.

What You Need to Know About 3 Day Life Coach Training

Whether it is three days, or three weekends, or three months, intensive, short-term life training will not properly train you to be a life coach. There may be benefits, and there may be specific types of training you can properly receive in three days – starting a new business, marketing, learning a new niche, and other aspects of having a coaching practice.

There are may factors that combine to make someone a good coach – aptitude for coaching, experience, communication skills, level of personal development, prior coach training, effort outside the classroom, and any actual coaching experience as part of your work.

All this talk about training leads us to the question of certification. Do you need to be certified to be a life coach? No, certification is not required. It’s like the wild, wild west in the coaching industry – unregulated and open for anyone to call themselves any type of coach they want to be.

However, certification will help you appear more respectable, display a commitment to your profession, and assist you in attracting, obtaining, and retaining more clients. It’s like a degree hanging on your office wall – clients will see it as a sign of achievement and an assurance that you have been trained – not a 3 day life coach training, but training that is more comprehensive, extensive, and valuable.

I totally agree with this, and the “wild west” analogy. Unfortunately I got pulled in by a coach who did have some experience, but turned out to be unable to help me much – due to my personality and learning style. A disappointing experience.

I agree that 3 days training cannot give you the knowledge, skills and experience that a coach needs. You may think that you can call yourself a coach with short program courses and you can but that does not mean that you will be able to do your job and effectively coach your clients. Adequate knowledge through education and continuous training is required to become a full fledged coach.

Who would want to be coached by someone who has just undergone training for 3 days? How can you trust someone with your life long dreams and goals if he is not equipped with the skills and knowledge of a true coach? Experience, training and good education is required to become an effective coach and 3 days is not adequate time to do that.
