How to Start a Training Alliance For Coaches

September 27, 2012 by Fred Phillips 1 Comment

Starting a local training alliance for coaches is one way to help assemble local coaches of different stripes, advance the level of coaching in your area, and ensure a continuing education for all coaches. A training alliance for coaches would require teamwork, collaboration, and partnership amongst coaches who are often competing for business.

What is a Training Alliance For Coaches?

A coaching training alliance would be a group of member coaches who pursue ongoing educational opportunities and training as a group. It would be a network of coaches who seek to bring in speakers, host training classes, sponsor expert guest coaches, and promote courses and seminars. Having a group of coaches working together to sponsor educational events would help to lower seminar and speaker costs and potentially provide more opportunities for everyone in the coaching business.

If you or a small group of your peers want to create a training alliance for coaches, it is important to note that it will most likely not be an easy task. You will need to draw up a business plan, create legal documents, locate sources of initial funding, and promote your alliance to all coaches in your area. Doing this alone may be nearly impossible, but if you can gather up a few peers and designate certain tasks, the alliance creation may not be too difficult.

Promoting the alliance and getting other coaches to join may be the most difficult task. It is human nature to resist new things and coaches may be reluctant to pay a fee to join something that has no track record. However, to get this coach alliance off the ground and running, you need to promote, market, sell, and promote some more. You most likely have plenty of experience promoting your own coaching practice; just use what you have learned and apply it to something new.

The Benefits of a Training Alliance to a Coach

  • Creates a network of coaches in your city or region.
  • By pooling money (fees to join the alliance), the group will be able to bring in important names in the coaching profession to speak.
  • By pooling money, the group can sponsor classes and seminars that provide additional education and certifications.
  • Helps create an association of coaches who can share knowledge, ideas, skills, and stories which advances the skill level and competency of every coach.
  • Provides an instant forum for coaches to refer clients to each other. A life coach may have a client who really needs executive coaching and can refer this person to an executive coach in the alliance. Referrals are a cornerstone of a coaching practice and referrals from other coaches are an important piece of that pie.
  • By becoming involved in a coaches network, it may be possible to spot unfulfilled needs in the local field. Placing yourself into a niche in the coaching industry is a great way to increase your business and expand your practice; by working with other coaches in your region, you may find that there are a few niches that need coaches.

A training alliance for coaches, at its foundation, is merely a network of area coaches. However, by placing an emphasis on training and continuing education, you can create a new type of group. A group that will be beneficial to all coaches in your area and provide further evidence that the coaching field is a dynamic industry always striving to improve and advance for the sake of both its practitioners and its clients.
