May 30, 2021 by Jeannie Cotter Leave a Comment

If you are considering a career in life coaching, you’ve probably wondered how long does it take to become a life coach. Being a life coach is a much faster-paced career choice than being a therapist, psychologist, counselor, or social worker. Most life coaching programs require between 50 and 150 hours of work in order to acquire ICF certification, which typically takes up a year to complete. But how many years do you need to be a life coach? Let’s find out.

How long does it take to become a life coach?

To answer this question, there are two factors to consider: 1) the length of the certification program and 2) the time required to become confident in coaching other people.

  1. The length of the certification program (training programs)

The curriculum for life coach training can differ, just like every other type of education.

Anything from weekend training to two-year programs is available. Depending on the path you take, you can receive your coaching certification in as little as six months (half a year) or as long as five years.

What does it take to be a life coach?

Life coaching may sound like a dream job, but it is not for everybody. You need to have a certain gift of wanting to help others. for you to be able to bear the life of another individual.

One of the most essential traits a life coach must have is the ability to listen and empathize. Sympathizing is feeling for the client, empathizing is putting yourself in the client’s shoes. By empathizing, you are able to visualize a client’s life and reflect it to them so they see how they are, similar to looking into the mirror.

Secondly, a life coach does not tell the client what to do and must be able to control one’s urge to give advice. The life coach helps the client realize what it is he or she is looking for. A coach must be fun loving and innovative. The basis of life coaching is creating interactive programs that aid the client in internalizing and realizing potentials, wants, desires, and goals.

Lastly, a life coach must be eager to help others. You must be able to recognize who needs encouragement and who has a serious problem. Life coaching is highly criticized because a lot of people call themselves experts without proper training. Do not be one of those people. Get education and training.

Conclusion

Life coaching is more than just running a profitable company. It is all about encouraging others to make positive changes in their lives and stick with them. What you should know is that the skills required to become a good coach are determined by your level of personal growth and the amount of time you invest in coaching education.
