How is Life Coaching Different from Counselling?

July 26, 2022 by Jeannie Cotter Leave a Comment

How is life coaching different from counselling? Counselling and life coaching are two different services that help people navigate their way through the challenges in life. Both involve working with individuals to address and overcome challenges they face, but there are some important differences.

Counselling is usually offered as a one-on-one service, while life coaching may be offered in group sessions. Both counselling and life coaching can help you achieve your goals, but they are very different. They can have many of the same benefits for the person being helped. However, each service has its own role in helping an individual achieve their personal goals and targets. Here’s more about what these services have in common and how life coaching is different from counselling.

What Is Counselling?

Counselling is a type of therapy that helps people resolve issues and overcome challenges, often related to mental health. The term “counselling” is often used interchangeably with therapy, but not all therapists are counsellors.

People typically see a counsellor for issues such as stress, anxiety, depression, relationship issues, and more. In counseling, you and a counsellor work together to identify and resolve issues you are facing. While the counsellor is trained to help you work through your issues and provide valuable insight, you’re in charge of making the changes you want and acting toward your goals.

What Is Life Coaching?

Coaching is an alternative to therapy and is focused on life skills. A coach helps you identify your strengths and weaknesses to help you reach your goals, such as managing stress, overcoming an addiction, or pursuing a dream.

Like therapy, coaching can involve one-on-one sessions and some self-exploration. However, coaching is geared toward helping you identify your strengths and develop skills you need to reach your goals. Coaching is focused on the here and now, while therapy often looks back at past experiences.

Similarities Between Counseling and Life Coaching

Both counselling and life coaching can help you resolve issues and reach your goals. Both can also be beneficial for mental health, leading to a feeling of empowerment and self-confidence.

Both services offer you a safe space to explore your feelings, talk about what’s going on in your life, and make positive changes toward a better future.

Both counselling and life coaching involve working with a professional to help you identify what’s holding you back from achieving your goals. The counsellor or coach will use techniques such as goal setting, self-exploration, and reflection to help you identify areas for improvement and make changes that will improve your life.

How is Life Coaching Different from Counselling?

Although both services help you overcome challenges and achieve your goals, they are very different. How is life coaching different from counselling? Here’s how they both differ:

Duration – The length of time you receive for each service also varies. Therapy may last anywhere from 6 weeks to years, and often the length of treatment depends on the type of therapy, the severity of your issues, and the goals of the therapy. Coaching is usually much shorter, lasting anywhere from a few weeks to a year. Again, this time varies depending on the type of coaching you’re receiving and your goals.

Setting – The setting in which you receive each service also has some key differences. In a counselling session, the setting is a therapeutic environment, and you are the primary focus. In coaching, you are working toward achieving a goal, and the successful interaction and relationship between the coach and you take primary roles.

Focus – The focus of each type of service is also very different. In counselling, you’re exploring your past and current experiences. In coaching, you are looking toward the future and setting goals that can help you achieve a better life.

Final Thoughts

Like all services, counselling and life coaching have the potential to benefit your life in many ways. While the two services have many similarities, both help you overcome challenging issues, learn new skills, and reach your goals using different approaches.
