How Do I Start a Career in Coaching?

May 25, 2020 by Jeannie Cotter Leave a Comment

Even if you’re not a born coach, at some point in your life, you’ve probably wondered to yourself, “How do I start a career in coaching?” after watching an inspirational life coaching video on YouTube. Here are a few things you need to consider when starting a career in coaching.

How Do I Start a Career in Coaching?

Quitting your present job and putting all your eggs in the so-called basket of a coaching job can be pretty scary. Of course, you don’t have to quit your job to be a coach; it can be done part time, but then you have to be willing to give up some family/personal time (at least temporarily) to launch your coaching career.

Either way, there are risks and sacrifices involved in becoming a coach. And, how can you be sure coaching is going to be worth it, or that you have what it takes to be a coach? After all, becoming a coach is NOT the right path for everyone. It takes the right combination of desire, organization, motivation, time, skill, and creativity to be successful in coaching.

Just about anyone can be successful in coaching, but it is smart to take the time to do a little self-evaluation before you jump off that cliff.

Assess Your Aptitude for Coaching

As discussed earlier, it is important to know if you have what it takes to make it in coaching. Your coaching career will require a certain amount of dedication and effort. It takes hard work and motivation to reach success in coaching.

Evaluating yourself to see if you have the right qualities to succeed in coaching is the first step in helping you decide if you’re going in the right direction when starting your coaching career.

Figuring Out Which Type of Coaching to Get Into

There are plenty of options when it comes to answering the question “How Do I Start a Career in Coaching?”. Which type of coaching is right for you? The best place to start is to ask some questions:

  1. What type of coaching would best match my knowledge/skill set?
  2. Do I want to sell a product or a service or some combination of both? Look at your current occupation. Is there some common problem or gripe associated with it … could you enter coaching to solve that problem? Or … do you have a hobby or personal interest that could be turned into a coaching career? Finding coaching products you like either offline or online can also give you ideas for your own coaching product or service. It is not necessary that your idea be completely original. You can be successful by developing your own ‘unique selling point’ that sets your coaching product apart from all the others out there.
  3. What kind of financial resources can I put into my coaching training? Can you afford to pay several thousand dollars to enroll in a coaching training program? If not, don’t despair. There are many online coaching training programs you can enroll in on a shoestring, or maybe a little more. But just keep in mind that what you can afford to invest will influence the type of coaching you choose to go into.

One of the best coaching product ideas for a coach who wants to start a coaching career is … Infoproducts!

Every coach is an expert at something … even you. Just think about it. What do you know a lot about? Is it the industry you’ve worked in for the past 20 years … or that special hobby … or that life-changing experience?

Whatever your specialty is, you have valuable knowledge. Share your knowledge through an e-book. It isn’t necessary for coaching how-to books to be great literary works. What’s most important is that they offer easy-to-follow information.

Truly, the difference between coaches who succeed and those who fail most often boils down to whether or not the coach has acquired the knowledge and training necessary to launch a coaching career.

The skillset necessary to start a coaching career isn’t out of reach. It’s simply a matter of finding the right tools and using them to your best advantage. These tools can be found in books, through online coaching courses, through training, or through the mentorship of a successful coach.
