If literally being “called” by some higher power to become a coach strikes you as being a little spooky, remember that the word vocation comes from the Latin “vocatio” which means “to summon” or “to call.” I believe that each of us is here to fill a role, and that the closer we come to filling that role, the happier we are and the greater the positive impact that we have on the world. But how do you know your calling for sure?

Look to Your Past and to Your Heroes

When we are doing what we have been called to do, we feel in harmony with ourselves and with the universe. We experience what is often called “flow.” So think back on times in your life when you were particularly at peace, when time was not an issue, and when you felt that what you were doing was making things better. Also think back on events in the lives of people that you admire – your heroes. What did you admire in them? Could you see yourself doing what they did and feeling proud of it? These are hints of what your calling might be.

Get Some Coaching

Each of us has a personality style and values and foundational skills that are pretty much hard wired. These elements can be determined with great precision through assessments. The combinations of these elements align with specific roles. And while there are a number of roles for each combination, starting with this “short list” can give us a real head start. So whether you are being called to become a coach or something else, this process is a great first step.

If Your Heart Calls You to Become a Coach, Follow Through

Few callings take the form of signs written in the sky, so don’t expect your calling to announce itself in a way that knocks you off your horse. But while it can be pretty subtle, it is there if you are listening. Once you get the message, it is up to you to follow through. If you are being called to become a coach, this is a good time for you to learn that every coach needs to have at least one coach to help them know their mind and follow through on their calling.
