Find the Right Academy for Coach Training

June 2, 2012 by Fred Phillips Leave a Comment

Coaches are needed now more than ever and the best way to start a coaching career is to find an academy for coach training. Life coaches, career coaches, management coaches, wellness coaches – they are all in demand. The coaching field is expanding rapidly and many academies for coach training have popped up online to meet this growing demand.

An academy for coach training is any school, college, or online program that offers specialized coach training. Though there are many to be found, it is best to chose carefully. Not all training academies are created equal.

In these challenging and difficult times, coaches have an unlimited opportunity to help people make changes in their lives and careers. Getting the right education is the starting point for any potential coach. Get it right from the start and your career will take off and grow with the industry. Your success as a coach will depend on your training.

How to Find the Right Academy for Coach Training

The first thing to determine is whether the program is truly teaching coaching. This may seem obvious and sort of a no-brainer, but any academy or school can call their program a coaching program. Make sure they are teaching coaching principles and skills that have been described in the International Coach Federation (ICF) coaching competencies. Print them out from the ICF website and then ask about them via e-mail or phone before you sign up with any academy for coach training.

Any good coaching program will have a mentoring component. Being properly trained as a coach requires more than just reading and classroom activity. The best training also requires doing. A good academy will offer the opportunity to apply and practice the skills you have learned. The opportunity to observe other coaches, be evaluated by peers, and to experience real-world coaching with a skilled mentor coach is a great way to prepare you for your own coaching practice. A good coaching program should be able to offer you this real-world experience.

The final item you should look for in a good coaching program is a certification. The best programs offer an internal certification and an ICF certification. A meaningful certification includes supervision and evaluation of your work with real clients. The ICF certification ensures that your training meets the ICF certification requirements.

Do you really need these certifications? You bet your, um, butt you do. Well, actually there are no requirements to call yourself a coach. You may have other credentials and letters you can include with your name – MBA, Ph.d., CEO, or others. However, to inform your potential clients that you have been properly trained and are dedicated to being the best coach you can be, certifications are a necessity. Your academy for coach training should offer their own and one through the ICF.

Finding the right academy for coach training is like finding the right spouse. Sure, you can divorce them, or change academies, but why not make certain the first time and avoid the hassles. The right coaching training program will ensure that you start out on the right track in your coaching career.
