Does a Weight Loss Surgery Coach Training Program Exist?

The question is not a common one – Does a Weight Loss Surgery Training Program Exist? – but, it may be one that becomes increasingly important. A report issued last year by the Trust for America’s Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation predicts that 50 percent of American adults will be obese by 2030. Currently, 35 percent of adults and 17 percent of children, aged 2 to 19, are obese.

Because obesity raises the risk for a number of diseases, including type 2 diabetes and heart disease, stopping and reducing the rates of obesity is one of the number one health priorities for the country. It is also a major concern for individuals who are trying to lose weight, but are not achieving their weight loss goals. One method people are turning to, if they are substantially overweight, and diets don’t seem to work, is weight loss surgery. Because this type of surgery is on the increase, there is a room for a niche coach – the weight loss surgery coach, and to train these coaches, there will need to be a weight loss surgery coach training program.

What Would a Weight Loss Surgery Coach Training Program Teach?

What would a weight loss surgery coach training program teach its students? Attitude and behavior are the most important things for someone who plans to undergo this type of surgery. A training program would focus on ways to create an upbeat and awesome attitude, both about the surgery itself, and about the new life an individual will have after the surgery and recovery.

The program would also focus on behaviors. How can a coach help clients change behavior? Learning ways to help clients recognize bad behavior, modify their behavior, and learn new, healthier behaviors would be an integral part of the training.

Another component of the weight loss surgery coaching training program would be learning skills to help clients overcome emotional eating. Many people overeat due to depression or sadness, or after some trauma has occurred in their lives. A coach can help them find other ways to cope with issues and problems, and help them avoid the same behavior that led them to obesity in the first place.

The program would cover some of the diagnostic procedures and different weight loss surgeries so coaches can speak with their clients in a knowledgeable manner. Of course, this knowledge would not be meant to replace the expertise of a medical specialist, but by understanding these procedures and everything a client will go through when preparing and undergoing the surgery, coaches can empathize and educate their clients. Helping them know what to expect will make the surgery and recovery process easier and more positive.

A weight loss surgery coach training program may not be the first thing prospective coaches think about when they make the decision to become a coach. However, this niche in the coaching industry will be growing as more people desire to become healthy and look better. Coaches can enter this niche with minimal competition and a growing pool of potential clients, as long as they have the proper training.
