Coaching Tips – Motivation and Inspiration

July 1, 2016 by Fred Phillips 1 Comment

Here is one of those clunky keyword phrases – coaching tips motivation – that defy the rules of grammar and make for a very difficult writing session for a blog writer. But, this grammar-defying keyword phrase just might supply me with a bit or motivation and inspiration!

Coaching Tips – Motivation and Inspiration

Motivation and inspiration are the driving forces behind most of our actions. Sometimes, desperation makes us take action, but motivation and inspiration comes into play somewhere along the journey to success.

Can a life coach actually motivate and inspire? Can a life coach actually get someone to take action? Can a life coach turn desperation into inspiration through motivation?

The Difference Between Motivation and Inspiration

Motivation is usually an external force that pushes us ahead – an impatient boss who needs that sales report pronto! Inspiration an inner voice that keeps you moving forward – I need to get that sales report done ahead of schedule as I work toward a promotion. Motivation is usually more short term while inspiration is something that guide you past the obstacles to ultimately achieve your goals.

I read somewhere that motivation is a pulling force – the motivation will pull you to the task you need to do. However, I look at motivation as more of a pushing force while inspiration is a pulling force. If you need to get that sales report done, you are pushed by external forces – your boss, the threat of not having a job, a potential bonus, etc. However, if you want to write a book, your inspiration pulls you to this hire purpose.

You are pushed to get things accomplished but you are pulled to achievements and greatness.

If you have a goal – let’s say that goal is to write the Great American Novel – motivation pushes you to get specific tasks done (outlining, composing each chapter, proof reading, looking for an agent, etc.), but inspiration pulls you toward the finished product – the successful achievement of your dreams.

Can Coaching Motivate and Inspire?

Since the title of this article is “Coaching Tips – Motivation and Inspiration” you can probably guess the answer. However, it’s not a simple – in fact the answer is quite complex.

You’ve heard the expression, “it takes two to tango?” Well, coaching fits that axiom to a tee. About coaching tips – motivation and inspiration: no, coaches you can’t motivate and inspire all by yourself. Achieving results in a coaching sessions takes the commitment and hard work from both the coach and the client. The most important of many coaching tips? Motivation and inspiration come from the client – you are merely there as a facilitator.

Coaching is About Both Motivation and Inspiration

Now that I’ve made my way through this awkward keyword phrase – coaching tips motivation – I’ve also included inspiration. That brings me to the main thing coaches should understand about these two terms.

Motivation is about the reason your client does something. Inspiration is about the process and the passion of doing something. Motivation is more about the action plan and inspiration is more about the goal and the passion behind that goal. And yes coaches, you can be part of a client’s motivation and inspiration – but you can’t make them do it. It takes two to tango, remember?
