Motivational speakers make good money, but is it possible to get that great gig if you have a motivational coaching certification? Well, it’s start, but it’s not a ticket that will gain you admission to this rarefied field.
What is a Motivational Coaching Certification?
A motivational coach is merely a life coach who uses a fancy name or who has found a specific niche within the life coaching field. A motivational coach certification is, therefore, very similar to a life coaching certification. It only takes a few steps to get a coaching certification, but those steps take dedication and hard work. Being a coach also takes passion and a strong desire to help others.
If you have a motivational coaching certification, and have been coaching for a time, it might be a viable option for you to look into motivational speaking. Getting to that point takes additional work and some diligent self-promotion.
Becoming a Motivational Speaker
Making the transition from coach to speaker is natural. Though coaching involves plenty of listening, you have also spent plenty of time conversing with your clients and imparting some of your wisdom and knowledge. Taking this wisdom and knowledge up to a stage or a lectern is merely a natural progression of your career.
To become a sought-after speaker, you must develop an area of expertise. You may already have one in your coaching business; if not, you should spend a few years concentrating on specific areas within your field. Once you become a speaker, you must bring extensive knowledge and expertise to the audience.
It is also wise to complete a public speaking course to learn techniques and skills to draw your audience in, maintain their attention, and get them to buy in to what you are saying. Motivational speakers may seem as if their skills are natural, but most of them have taken courses, been mentored, and have worked diligently at their craft.
Whether you have a motivational coaching certification or not, an effective speaker needs to have a style. It is best if that style fits your personality. If you are a Type-A personality, having a dynamic speaker style fits. If you are a more laid-back person, build your stage style around your milder nature. You can also decide to be more humorous or possess a more serious tone in your delivery.
If you will be targeting a specific group of people, it becomes essential to know everything you can about that group. If you to speak to diverse audiences, then basic knowledge of each groups would be sufficient.
Promotion and Value are Absolutely Essential
You can have a motivational coaching certification, take a few speaking classes, and call yourself a motivational speaker, but without any gigs, you are merely unemployed. You must promote yourself – you can do this by having a website, writing expert articles, online advertising, distributing brochures, speaking free at local groups, or getting listed on motivational speaking networks. Targeted and continual promotion is the key to obtaining speaking gigs that pay good money.
The last step in the process is perhaps the most important – when you speak – give your audience something of value. You want them to walk out smarter, more energized, and more motivated than when they came in. If you can do that, motivational coaching certification or not, you will be a sought-after speaker for a long time.
