Becoming a Job Coach for the Disabled

Becoming a job coach for the disabled might put you in a great niche within the coaching industry. Being in a niche means you are specializing within the coaching industry. Finding the right niche makes you the proverbial big fish in a small pond. It also gives you a chance to make some great money.

Coaches Want More Than Money

Everyone needs money, but there is more to a career than making money. That’s what makes coaching such a great career – not only is there an opportunity to earn a great living, you can earn while you help others. Not all careers offer that type of opportunity.

Coaches Want to Help

Becoming a job coach for the disabled puts you in a position to help deserving people with challenges and disabilities that sometimes hinder employment. You can help them develop and improve their working skills while showing them avenues to success in a competitive job market. Becoming a job coach for people with disabilities allows you to offer your skills, knowledge, and expertise to people who sometimes lack the training but who have the talent to become very successful.

Becoming a Job Coach for the Disabled

How do you become a job coach for the disabled? The first step to becoming a coach is to take a coaching program. There are many accredited coaching programs on the internet. Finding the right one for you involves some research and effort.

Education and human service-related majors and individuals who specialized in working with the disabled are a great fit for this coaching niche. Adding the right coach training to your resume puts you in the driver’s seat. A college degree is certainly not necessary to enter this field, though it may give you an advantage if you are seeking employment with a large coaching firm. However, if you are starting your own practice, a degree is not needed.

Whether you have a college education or not, completing a coach certification program from a reputable coaching institution is essential. Many of these coaching programs offer flexible online options for people who are currently working. Although a certification is optional, it provides you with a measure of respect before you have even coached your first client.

If you want to go the employment route first before starting your own practice, it is wise to look for employment with public or private organizations that work with the disabled. Even if a coaching position is not available, it may be a good idea to apply for a different job within the organization so you can gain valuable experience in the field.

Following these steps will start you on your way to becoming a job coach for the disabled. However, coaching takes passion for helping others, a dedication to your craft, a desire to pursue knowledge and continual self-improvement, and a strong sense of work ethic. Does that describe you? If so, welcome to the world of coaching!

How do you get around the mentality that because someone is on disability they can’t earn any money or they will lose it?

I’ve run into this many times over the years. This has caused me to basically give up on disabled people.

    Looking forward to your response.
