Want to become a counseling superstar with all the trappings of success? Well, if you are in the coaching or counseling biz, or if you are thinking of getting into this dynamic and rewarding career, you will want to read this rest of the article. Becoming a counseling or coaching guru takes hard work, dedication, patience, and perseverance.
What is a Counseling or Coaching Superstar
What do I mean by a counseling or coaching superstar? It doesn’t mean that you are famous, your name is known far and wide (think Tony Robbins), or that you get your mug on the cover of a magazine. Though all those achievements certainly mean you have achieved superstar status, being a superstar can mean different things to different people, but here’s a few pertinent definitions:
- A successful business in which you earn a good living and feel a high measure of financial success.
- Respect and admiration from your peers.
- Clients beating down your door, your inbox filled with messages, your phone lines clogged with appointment and speaking requests, and appointment times filled into the distant future.
- Personal satisfaction for being in a career in which you help others while you help yourself.
5 Steps to Take to Become a Counseling or Coaching Superstar
The first step is to get all the education you can. Don’t take shortcuts or scrimp; education is essential if you want to become a superstar in the coaching world. While you are educating yourself, pile up the certifications. Certification are not essential in the coaching world, but if you want to be a superstar, you’ll need all you can get. They signal to the world that you are educated and dedicated.
The second step is to learn how to promote yourself. That’s right – sell, sell, sell yourself. To become a counseling or coaching superstar, you must promote and market yourself endlessly. Use the Internet, the media, social website, networking, peer groups, alumni groups, business groups – any and every way possible. A strong and highly visible online presence is essential – learn how to use websites, webinars, social media, and the power of the Internet.
The third step is to master communication skills. Communication skills begin the moment your phone rings or an e-mail is sent. To become a counseling or coaching all-star, clear and precise communication with all people involved in your practice, employees, peers, and especially clients is the lifeblood of your business.
The fourth step is to decide on the type of people with whom you wish to work. Do you want to work with executives or athletes, CEOs or housewives? Think about the type of people to whom you relate, or with who you would prefer to work.
The final step is to find a niche in whatever you field you select. If you want to be a career coach, find a specialized niche within this field. Being the proverbial big fish in a small pond is better than being a small fish in a big pond. Just make sure there is a pond!
Those five steps will help you on your way to success. By the time you finish with these essential steps you will be well on your way in your quest to become a counseling or coaching superstar.
