Any Coaching Certification Can Be Called a Motivational Coaching Certification

May 6, 2016 by Fred Phillips 5 Comments

Is there such a thing as a motivational coach certification? Perusing the Internet you can find many different types of coaching certifications, but it’s not easy to find one that is centered on motivation.

What is Motivational Coaching?

Being a motivational coach is not really any different than being a life coach, or any other type of coach. You are hired to help clients get motivated to achieve goals. You are hired to identify goals, encourage, inform, support, reflect, assess, and modify behavior. If there is a motivational coaching certification, it really wouldn’t be much different than any other coaching certification.

Why Motivational Coaching?

The coaching industry is booming and individuals and organizations are looking to hire coaches for numerous reasons. They are looking for help from coaches to achieve goals, whether it is health, wealth, career, or life achievement goals for individuals, or sales, profit, or performance goals for organizations. Motivation is a key component of goal achievement, and one of the things for which clients usually need the most help. A motivational coach certification would tell potential clients that you can offer outcomes they are seeking.

What Would a Motivational Coach Do?

With a motivational coaching certification, you would be able to work with clients in many different areas:

  • Help them identify goals – both long term and short term.
  • Help them visualize what a life fueled by motivation would look like.
  • Help them learn ways to self-motivate.
  • Use interviewing and active listening techniques to identify where a client’s passion lies.
  • Help a client understand how behavior modification can help overcome obstacles and change attitudes.
  • Help clients construct new attitudes about specific parts of life, and about life in general.
  • Work deeply on core issues – both problems and goals.
  • Use your position as a coach to encourage, support, and assess progress and achievement.

The Biggest Problem With Being a Motivational Coach

One problem you may have with clients is that they may be more motivated to please you than actually please themselves. Because of your motivational coaching certification, they may view you as the teacher and themselves as the student.

You must be careful to make certain that you are only perceived as a coach and a facilitator, not a teacher. You really don’t teach – you help them teach themselves!

Have Clients Focus on Results

In coaching sessions, it is important to focus on the results and let the motivation to achieve these results just flow from actions the clients (which your subtle help) have deemed necessary to get those results

Have the clients create a posterboard (or even a sheet of legal-sized paper) and write a few desired result across the top of the board. Beneath the results they should list the actions needed to achieve those results. Next, they should list the purpose of each action and what role it plays in achieving results. With this type of “outline” clients can see the details of goal achievement, and have a better of understanding of the blueprint that supports true motivation.

A motivational coaching certification would be like any type of coaching certification – as a coach, you are there to help clients identify goals and then reach those goals – with motivation as a driving force to any goal achievement.
