A Simple Guide to Starting a Life Coaching Practice

February 17, 2022 by Jeannie Cotter Leave a Comment

Thinking of starting a life coaching practice? Starting a business in the coaching industry requires making some sound plans and learning a little bit about the industry.

Your ability to succeed or fail is completely on your shoulders. To ensure that you have a business that will be profitable, you will need to dedicate your time and effort to making it successful.

While there is a lot to learn, your effort will be well worth it. The freedom and flexibility to set your own hours, the possibilities of ever-increasing financial security, the wonderful feeling of self-accomplishment, and many more great rewards are all great reasons to start a life coaching practice.

(NOTE: If you want to learn how to start your own coaching business, then check out this webinar, called “How to Start Your Coaching Business in 30 Days“  During the webinar, I’ll cover how to get your first paid clients fast and make it feel natural for you. Click HERE now to attend the webinar.)

Now that you have decided to start your coaching business, you might be wondering “How can I get it off to the strongest possible start?”

These tips will help you on your journey…

Tips for starting a life coaching practice

The beginning is always the hardest step to take. You must perform different activities to find out what you will be doing, when you will do it, and how you will do it.

You must also find answers to many questions. You will have different operations to perform like selecting the coaching niche, determining the business structure, financial planning, drafting a business plan, finding out about tax requirements, establishing business processes, selecting a business location, handling business registration and licensing, and so on. The list is very big.

You must not only perform these but also get them right. You also need to prioritize the activities and perform them accordingly. Here are some practical tips that will enable you to start your coaching practice right:

Decide on the coaching niche that you are interested in. The main goal of your business should be to have clients. Without clients, your business will not succeed. You must have a coaching product or service that others will want. With no one paying for the product, it does not matter how much money or time you put into your coaching business.

Write a business plan. This will organize your business goals and plans, including finances. You can outline your plans to bring in clients, include information about the types of products and services that will be provided, and the expected financial returns and losses. Not only will this help you organize, but it will also allow others, such as potential long-term business partners and loan officers, to read through your plans to help them decide if they want to become involved with you and your coaching business. This can also cut down on the number of questions that they may have about your intentions regarding the future of your business.

Sort out your finances. Know in advance where your money is coming from and how you are going to fund your business. If you have not managed to save enough, approach potential lenders and investors and figure out what your chances are of raising enough money to start your business and have some extra to fall back on. Don’t presume anything. Check everything out for sure.

Get organized. Be sure to keep records and organize your goals and priorities. You also need to keep records that track the orders from your clients. You also need to keep adequate records of your expenses to ensure that you know exactly where every penny of the money that you are spending is going. You may want to invest in a filing cabinet and assign a folder to each client so that you are able to locate past orders for each of them quickly. This can be time saving if you receive a call that the client wants to order more of what they ordered last time but are unable to remember the exact name of the coaching product or service.

Advertise, advertise, advertise. In business, it is better to have too many clients than not enough clients. Advertising can be done in a variety of ways, online or offline, and you may need to experiment with several of these options before finding the ones that help bring in the most coaching clients.

Be totally committed. Starting a life coaching practice requires a lot of long hours and hard toil. Be prepared to spend endless days and sleepless nights as you tie up loose ends and put your plan together.

Following these tips will work wonders in getting your life coaching practice started (and growing) in the right direction. Now get out there and start building your business!
