Why Become a Cancer Coach

March 24, 2012 by Fred Phillips 4 Comments

What is the best answer to the question, “Why become a cancer coach?” Cancer is one of the most tragic diseases in the world today and if you become a cancer coach you can have a positive impact on thousands of lives. Cancer coaches help cancer patients find the most up-to-date medical information regarding conventional patient care, help them learn about effective, complementary care, and even counsel them on alternative forms of cancer treatment.

That’s right – the best answer is that you can have a positive impact on thousands of lives. You can help people cure this tragic disease and help others live the last days of their lives more comfortably and positively.

Become a Cancer Coach and Help Patients Live

The main goal of a cancer coach should be to help patients find ways to cure their cancer and extend their lives. Having a “never say never” attitude no matter the initial prognosis is essential. As a coach, you must do all you can to help your patients find the best care, follow the physician’s advice, eat healthy, and attempt to rid their bodies of this insidious killer. You must get patients to believe that cancer is not a death sentence.

The # 1 Goal of a Cancer Coach

When you become a cancer coach, your number one goal is to bring hope, control, dignity, joy, and optimism back to your clients.

You also help them find the right doctor and learn the proper ways to ask questions and communicate with the physician. You provide them with ways to reduce the risks associated with chemo, radiation, and surgery. You help them find ways to reduce hair loss and organ damage. You provide them with ways to reduce nausea, fatigue, emotional trauma, and physical pain. You help your clients persevere and survive cancer with dignity.

When you become a cancer coach, there are many options to counsel, coach, and reach patients. You can utilize webinars, online publications, forums, e-mails, or one-on-one coaching. You can reach the most people and have an impact on the greatest number of people by utilizing the various online methods, but nothing beats the power of one-on-one coaching. The personal touch can bring so much hope and joy to someone struggling to defeat cancer.

When you become a cancer coach, you can select which coaching method works best for you. Though coaching cancer patients can often be difficult and depressing, it can also bring such tremendous moments of joy – to both the coach and the patient. As a cancer coach, you have the power to help someone defeat an insidious disease and reclaim their health, vitality, and life!

If you decide that coaching cancer patients is the perfect career for you, you need to obtain the proper schooling and training, and become certified as a Professional Cancer Coach with the National Association of Professional Cancer Coaches (NAPCC). Becoming a cancer coach means you are entering a career in which you can have a huge impact on the lives of others while securing your own future in the world. It is a noble career choice and brings many rewards beyond the financial benefits.

Jeffrey, What a compelling article and a way to serve society with an open giving heart. It would take a tremendous commitment to give yourself to the training necessary to be a compassionate, knowledgeable cancer coach. I’m not sure I am that kind of person, but I can do my part by giving to research. I enjoy giving to St Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
I really appreciate your heart in this matter.
    Thank you so much,
    Lynn

Jeffrey…This is an article that everyone should read. It is inspiring and is giving back to society. I spend 10 years of my life as a critical care nurse and I clearly see the need for this type of profession. when I was in medicine, these types of entities did not exist. The pain and suffering that I witnessed was incredibly significant. Patients, families, and support staff could benefit from this. Thanks!

My stepmom has stage 3 ovarian cancer, but never had a coach. I have heard of some coaches that specialize in helping cancer patients… most of the ones I do know have been through it, which is pretty helpful because they have firsthand experience.

    Hi Jeffrey

This is so wonderful to know. My daughter in law has been going through stage 4 brain cancer for the last year and the professionals around her have been great. I don’t think there has been anyone of this nature though. This type of couch would come in very handy for her and the family. It’s been a terrible tragic ordeal. Thanks for the information.
