What Qualifications Do You Need To Be A Successful Life Coach

March 18, 2014 by Fred Phillips 2 Comments

What qualifications do you need to be a successful life coach? There are no requirements needed to call yourself a life coach, and who knows, if you are lucky, even without experience or any particular qualifications, you might become successful.

However, there are specific traits, or qualifications that may boost your odds of becoming successful as a life coach. Certain personality traits, skills, or characteristics are important for coaches. What qualifications do you need to be a successful life coach? Let’s find out!

What Qualifications Do You Need To Be A Successful Life Coach

A “qualification” is defined as “a quality or accomplishment that makes someone suitable for a particular job or activity.” Using this definition as our guide, you don’t need any particular accomplishment to become a successful life coach. Having some experience with different aspects of life can help, but it isn’t required or even directly correlated with success in life coaching.

However, there are a few qualities that may put you in the driver’s seat for success in the coaching field. What qualifications do you need to be a successful life coach? Here are six of the most important:

  1. Empathy. You need to be able to feel what your clients are feeling and connect on a deeply personal level. Self-absorbed people do not make good coaches!
  2. Integrity. Like other professionals, integrity is crucial to your success. Clients may reveal secrets and trust you enough to share personal information. You must have the integrity to honor their trust. You must run your business with integrity and ethics; clients will quickly disappear if they feel their trust being violated.
  3. Skills of Inquiry. Everyone can ask questions, but can you ask the right questions? You must be able to ask the right questions to draw out deeper issues and help the client solve their own problems and find their own solutions.
  4. Insight. At times, you need to take a step back and critically assess your clients. You need to be able to turn this assessment in to insight. Insight will help you find a pathway forward for your clients and allow you to ask the right questions to help them find that pathway.
  5. Patience. Yes, patience is a virtue in the coaching profession. Clients often take time to identify and discuss their issues. Then, they often take more time to identify their goals and figure out solutions to reach their goals. You can prod and push them, but you can’t rush them. Patience is not only a virtue in the coaching profession, it is also a money maker!
  6. Listening skills. If the questions was singular – What qualification do you need to become a successful life coach? – the answer would be listening skills. It would be impossible to be a good coach without listening skills. Being a good listener means you are skilled at active listening. Active listening involves using the words, the tone, and the body language to assess what someone is saying. It also involves listener feedback by restating to confirm what they heard and the meaning of what they heard. Without great listening skills, you won’t be coaching for long.

What qualifications do you need to be a successful life coach? Start with these six and you’ll be on your way to a rewarding career in coaching. In fact, these six can be the answer to the question: What qualifications do you need to be a coach? Without these six, you won’t even be a mediocre coach!

To be able to connect with your clients is a must for coaches. Your client must feel that you understand them, empathize with them. You must also know what to ask your clients to make them open up and of course your listening skills must be spot on. Thanks for the share, very helpful.
