Wellness Coaching Certification – 5 Things to Look For

April 18, 2014 by Fred Phillips 2 Comments

Seeking a wellness coaching certification? If so, listen up for these five tips that will ensure you earn a certification that is worth way more than the paper it is printed on.

Wellness coaching is big…and it is going to get much, much bigger. The population is aging, but they are striving to hold on to their youth as long as they can. Young people are seeing the value of living a healthy lifestyle and are more concerned with their health and wellness.

Though we live in a fast food society and we are fat and getting fatter, the wellness industry is growing by leaps and bounds. This juxtaposition of unhealthy lifestyles with the desire to be healthy creates an opportunity for the certified wellness coach. People want to be healthy but need help getting there. You can help them…but a wellness coaching certification counts if you want to get make it in this dynamic industry.

Wellness Coaching Certification – 5 Things to Look For

  1. Is the certification and training health and wellness coaching specific. Sure, you want it to contain the basic of coaching, but if it is not centered around health and wellness coaching, find another program. You want to be a wellness coaching – get a wellness coach certification and training.
  2. Does the training count towards credit for higher-level education. Is it approved by organizations such as the NCHEC (The National Commission for Health Education Credentialing), the ACSM (the American College of Sports Medicine), and others? If you want to pursue other fields in the wellness industry, it would be nice if the courses you took to earn your certification counted when you continued your education, wouldn’t it?
  3. The training is offered in various forms. Can you attend a class in person, a webinar, or telephonic meetings? Many people are working toward their wellness coaching certification while they work…and those people need choices.
  4. The training offers continually updated tools, resources, and support. If they take your money and hand you a piece of paper, and then kick you out the door, this may not be the right training for you. They need to be constantly updating their support, and you should have access to this support after you earn your certification.
  5. The training must offer a true and workable methodology for behavioral change. To be a wellness coach means you are going to work at changing the behavior of your clients. In your training, you should learn how to take your client from Point A (an unhealthy or less healthy lifestyle) to Point B (a healthy or healthier lifestyle). The training must provide you with the skills you need to offer positive outcomes to your clients.

Earning a wellness coaching certification puts you in the fast lane for success. You can help others while also helping yourself. But, without the right training, the wellness coaching certification hanging on your wall might not attract or keep many clients, and you’ll be looking for another career real soon!
