Thinking about how to become a wellness coach? Well, you picked a good and a bad time. These are strange time we live in, indeed, and choosing to become a wellness coach at this time could be both a great decision or one that you may regret.

We live in an unwell world for two reasons – people are still becoming increasingly unhealthy and the state of our economy is equally distressed. So, if you are thinking about how to become a wellness coach and whether or not you should think about getting in to the industry, let’s analyze why its a good time…and a bad time – like Charles Dickens said, “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.”

The Best Reason to Become a Wellness Coach

From a recent study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, our nation’s health statistics are sobering, to say the least. With an emphasis on health, nutrition, and fitness in the media and schools, you would think that our nation was at the pinnacle of health, but you would be sadly mistaken, The statistics say:

  • One-third of all adults are overweight or obese
  • Three-fourths of all adults fail to get adequate amounts of exercise
  • One-third of all adults has high blood pressure
  • One-fourth of all adults still smoke
  • One-fourth of all grade school children are overweight

From looking at these statistics while also understanding that there is a push for improving health, it is easy to conclude that it is a great time to learn how to become a wellness coach. The pool of people who need coaching for their health, fitness, and nutrition is large and growing larger.

The Two Reasons Not to Become a Wellness Coach

The first reason to stay away from the coaching business is the sluggish and lackluster economy. Wages are stagnant and unemployment is still relatively high – the pool of potential clients may shrink because they don’t have enough discretionary income or they don’t have any income! The second reason is the competition. Several years ago, wellness coaching was merely a niche in the coaching field, but it has grown exponentially in recent years. More coaches for less clients is not a good formula for success. That is why one might conclude that it is a bad time to learn how to become a wellness coach.

Why Coaching is Still a Great Business

Because there are less jobs, because life has gotten complicated, because we are unhealthy yet want to get healthy, these are all great reasons to jump into coaching, and in particular, wellness coaching.

I think its a great time to be a wellness coach even if our economy is not doing well and so many people are living unhealthy lives. It is the right time because we are in distress and we need someone to lift us up. We need to have hope and hear someone on a positive note. We need a wellness coach in these trying times.
