How do you Become a Full-Fledged Professional in Counseling

The question: how do you become a full-fledged professional in counseling? The answer: hard work, patience, and time. How do you become a full-fledged professional in counseling? You work you butt off, that’s how!

Counseling, like coaching, is a great field if you truly enjoy helping people. Counseling can be a difficult career as you may deal with people going through severe emotional trauma or people who are trying to escape the relentless pull of addiction. As a counselor, you are in a position to deal with life-threatening problems, so you must have a passion for helping others to survive, succeed, and prosper in life.

How do you Become a Full-Fledged Professional in Counseling

The first step is education. Future counselors should pursue a major in psychology, psychiatry, sociology, or counseling. There are specific courses you must take to satisfy the requirements of your degree and the requirements of the state in which you will eventually practice. Most professional counseling jobs require a minimum of a master’s degree, so your education must continue after earning your bachelor’s degree. In is advisable to work toward your Ph.D as a full-fledged professional in counseling should have a post-graduate degree.

Once you have completed your educational requirements, you should research the licensing requirements in your chosen state. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, the requirements for each state are fairly common and universal. These include a master’s degree, some professional experience (paid or volunteer), and a passing score on the state’s licensing examination.

You can also earn certifications in specialty fields such as addition recovery and mental health. The National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC) offers a certifying exam which some states use as their licensing examination.

Answering the question, how do you become a full-fledged professional in counseling, starts with education and also includes certifications and experience. To become a professional in any career takes plenty of hard work and counseling is no exception.

What Do Professional Counselors Do?

When you are asking the question, how do you become a full-fledged professional in counseling, you also want to ask the question, what do I do as a professional in counseling. Professional counselors work in many different fields. They can focus on family, school, substance abuse, mental health, relationships, and other fields. They can also chose to work with individuals or groups. They spend their workdays working with clients on a variety of behavioral and psychological issues and problems. They also work in a variety of different environments, including hospitals, offices, schools, treatment centers, and rehabilitation facilities.

One more time – the question: how do you become a full-fledged professional in counseling? The answer – hard work, in the classroom and in the field.
