What Degree Do You Need to Become a Life Coach

January 22, 2014 by Fred Phillips 3 Comments

What degree do you need to become a life coach? Do you even need a degree to become a life coach? The answer to that is NO. There is no degree needed to enter the life coaching field, but you might want to consider pursuing a degree if attending college is feasible.

What Degree Do You Need to Become a Life Coach – None, But….

“No” is the answer to the question: “What degree do you need to become a life coach?” But, even though there is no requirement to have a degree to enter the coaching profession, times have changed and education has become increasingly important. Fifty years ago it mattered little if you possessed a college degree, but in today’s market, you will often be competing with other life coaches who have a master’s or a doctorate.

So, the question shouldn’t be: “What degree do you need to become a life coach?” The question should be: “What degree is best for you if you are thinking of becoming a life coach?”

4 Educational Goals For a Life Coach

  1. College degree.   As mentioned, you don’t need this, but if you are in a position to get one, by all means, you should earn at least a bachelor’s degree. Training in communications, teaching, behavioral studies, and counseling are good starting points. Degrees in psychology, sociology, and counseling are excellent choices.
  2. Coaching programs.  If you have already completed college and not looking to return for an additional degree due to time or money, it is essential that you take a life coaching course through an accredited coaching program. Even if you have an appropriate college degree, it is crucial to take one of these programs. Look for one accredited by the ICF (International Coach Federation) or one of the other governing bodies in the industry.
  3. Certification.  Once you have completed a coaching program, you should get certified. The coaching program should lead directly to certification; being certified is your bread and butter. It tells potential clients that you have been trained and are dedicated to provided the best possible coaching.
  4. Experience.  Having experience in the real world is perhaps the most valuable education. If you want to be a business coach, having business experience is almost essential. If you want to be a money coach, having experience in the financial services industry is as good as a degree. There is no substitute for experience; it allows you to provide real world scenarios and inquiries when working with clients.

What degree do you need to become a life coach? What degree do you need to become a life coaching expert? Though no degree is needed, a college degree is one of the pillars of an educational foundation for every life coach. You can get by without one, if you have the experience and intensive coaching training. But, if you are in a position to attend college, it is definitely worth getting a college degree if your career aspiration is to become a coach.

I agree that even if we do not necessarily need a degree to become a coach, having a degree will be very helpful to us. We not only gain added knowledge but we are seen as more qualified by our clients.

Degrees are not necessary but if we are to become competitive in this industry having one is an advantage add to the fact that you have also taken courses in the coaching industry.

Hello. I don’t know if this comment is appropriate here, but since this is a blog for coaches in training I will send this comment in. I was thinking about working with a coach, and I was wondering if anyone here is looking for clients like me, or knows of someone who is? I am a single mother working as a cleaning lady with a minimum wage salary, so I have a very very limited budget. I was wondering if there is someone here who is a new coach just starting out and who wants to build their coaching practice and would be interested in getting clients and would not charge very much? My monthly income is minimum wage and I am a single mother raising my children alone, so as you can see I can’t afford a very high-charging coach. I am interested in receiving coaching because, although I am unskilled, I want to move into a better-paying means of earning a living. If you would like to get in contact with me, you can leave your comment here with a link to your website, and I will look you up. Thank you very much!
