Tell me\u2026 What does it take to<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>become a mentor<\/span><\/strong><\/a><\/span>?\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Can I become a coach<\/span><\/strong><\/a><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>before I have the experience and expertise to\u00a0<\/span>become a mentor<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span>?\u00a0\u00a0 To\u00a0<\/span>become a mentor<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span>\u00a0requires knowledge. \u00a0A <\/span>mentor is someone who has “been there, done that”. \u00a0They are an expert (at least compared to the person they are mentoring).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Becoming a coach doesn\u2019t necessarily mean you are an expert in a given area.\u00a0 You just need skills and tools for breakthroughs, and of course accountability.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Knowing this, let me ask you,\u00a0<\/span>can I become a coach<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span>\u00a0to\u00a0CEO\u2019s? \u00a0What if you don\u2019t have the background to\u00a0<\/span>become a mentor<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>at that level?<\/span><\/span>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Can I Become a Coach, Really? \u00a0The 5 Different Ways Coaches Provide Value:<\/span><\/h3>\n

1.<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Consultant (information)<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

2.<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Guru (confidence)<\/span><\/p>\n

3.<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Friend (listening)<\/span><\/p>\n

4.<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Strategist (planning\/ time )<\/span><\/p>\n

5.<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Leader (accountability)<\/span><\/p>\n

Can I become a coach<\/strong><\/span><\/span>\u00a0who is a consultant to a high powered executive?\u00a0 It depends on the area they need results in.\u00a0 You don\u2019t want to give strategic business advice and\u00a0<\/span>become a mentor<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0for the business of executives if you don\u2019t have a MBA.\u00a0 Your would-be client will “call you out” on it.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

“Hey! What do you know about this?” \u00a0Isn\u2019t that one of the greatest fears of a coach?
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

But\u00a0<\/span>can I become a coach<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0who is more of a friend and confidant?\u00a0 Is that valuable?\u00a0 Of course. \u00a0It\u2019s lonely at the top.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Can I become a coach<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0who is a strategist?\u00a0 Would that be overstepping boundaries?\u00a0 If they need strategy about marketing peanut butter in Europe?\u00a0 I\u2019m toast.\u00a0 I have no grounds to\u00a0<\/span>become a mentor<\/span><\/span>\u00a0in that area.\u00a0 But if they need someone to help with time management, getting past blocks that are keeping them from achieving their goals\u2026I can get results.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

What about a guru?\u00a0 That takes time and a following.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Can I become a coach<\/strong><\/span><\/span>\u00a0who is a leader for someone that’s accustomed to being the top dog?\u00a0 Sure.\u00a0 If I have the skills to hold them accountable, with the finesse and skill to maneuver between being dominant and allowing them to still feel in charge.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

You Don\u2019t Need to B<\/span>ecome a Mentor<\/span><\/span>\u00a0to Lead<\/span><\/h3>\n

As a coach, there are a lot of ways you can provide value for even the most successful people in their field.\u00a0 It\u2019s all about getting them the results they are looking for.
