As a good listener, it\u2019s not enough to be able to parrot back the words the other person is saying. Active listening requires that you demonstrate that you are truly interested in the other person. It\u2019s a necessity in order to establish rapport and in order to get the best possible outcomes for your clients during their coaching sessions.<\/p>\n<h3>Using Active Listening As Part Of Your Best Coaching Practices<\/h3>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u2022 Listen with the intent of understanding the facts and the underlying emotions of what the other person is saying.<br \/>\n\u2022 Give appropriate feedback. Nod your head, empathize with your facial features, and keep your body language open. If you happen to be on the phone, you can use your body even though the other person can\u2019t see you. It\u2019s been shown that people can \u201chear\u201d you smile over the phone.<br \/>\n\u2022 Paraphrase what you have heard them say. Not just the facts, but the underlying emotions. Ask questions in a way that lets the other person know you understand what he is trying to express, and also that you are interested in understanding at a deeper level.<br \/>\n\u2022 Give feedback and step into your client\u2019s world. Feedback such as, \u201cWow,\u201d \u201cHmm,\u201d \u201cOh, really,\u201d or even the occasional, \u201cThat\u2019s horrible!\u201d will people feel that you are with them.<\/p>\n<h3>Does This Mean You Have To Agree With Everything They Say?<\/h3>\n<p>Using active listening as part of your <strong>best coaching practices<\/strong> doesn\u2019t mean you agree with your client\u2019s perspective. It means going with them and spending some time in their world so you can step back outside and offer another perceptive. You wouldn\u2019t jump into the ocean to save a friend who was drowning and start drowning with him, would you? No, you would throw a life ring out so you could safely pull him back to the boat.
