{"id":4076,"date":"2010-07-17T17:58:13","date_gmt":"2010-07-17T17:58:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/coachestrainingblog.com\/becomeacoach\/?p=4076"},"modified":"2016-08-12T01:11:49","modified_gmt":"2016-08-12T09:11:49","slug":"exposed-3-persuasion-principles-from-a-coaching-mastermind","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/coachestrainingblog.com\/becomeacoach\/exposed-3-persuasion-principles-from-a-coaching-mastermind\/","title":{"rendered":"Exposed: 3 Persuasion Principles From A Coaching Mastermind"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Recently, I had the opportunity to experience 3 powerful principles of persuasion at work in a <a href=\"https:\/\/coachestrainingblog.com\/becomeacoach\/thoughts-on-the-who-and-how-of-leadership-coaching\/3995\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>coaching mastermind<\/strong><\/span><\/a>.\u00a0 While the details aren\u2019t important in themselves, they can be illustrative.\u00a0 I believe that perhaps the members of the group were unconsciously in the thrall of the 3 persuasion principles I noticed working that day.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Authority is tough to challenge<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>In the context of any group, including a <a href=\"https:\/\/coachestrainingblog.com\/becomeacoach\/thoughts-on-the-who-and-how-of-leadership-coaching\/3995\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>coaching mastermind<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, the leader, of course, is an authority figure.\u00a0 Studies have shown that human beings have a deep-seated internal directive to obey authority, even in the face of logic, pain or otherwise unacceptable consequences to themselves or to others.\u00a0 In my <strong>coaching mastermind<\/strong> example, the leader reminded the group that they had made a decision about a particular option, and stated that he thought they should stick to the decision.\u00a0 Then he asked if anyone had anything more to say about it.\u00a0 He invoked the power of authority and no one challenged him.<\/p>\n<p>You can use this persuasion tool in many situations.\u00a0 For example, to keep people awake and engaged when you are speaking from the front of the room, you might say \u201cturn to your neighbor and give him a high-5.&#8221;\u00a0 Most of your audience will do it.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The allure of consistency<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Look carefully at how people behave and you\u2019ll often see that we stick to a decision we\u2019ve made even if the reasons change and another choice might make more sense.\u00a0 It\u2019s human nature to think in ways that are consistent with our choice in order to justify it, rather than to change it.<\/p>\n<p>As Robert Cialdini says in Influence, his classic book on persuasion, \u201cit is obvious that internal consistency is a hallmark of logic and intellectual strength, while its lack characterizes the intellectually scattered and limited among us.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 This drive for consistency showed up in the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">coaching mastermind<\/span>, individually and collectively, as an unwillingness to deviate from the agreed plan.\u00a0\u00a0 This was a great demonstration of the power of a public commitment, which is a very important tool in group coaching.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Internal social proof in the coaching mastermind <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The third principle of persuasion evident in the <strong>coaching mastermind<\/strong> example is social proof.\u00a0 When the mastermind leader offered the opportunity to volunteer dissent from his opinion, no one spoke up.\u00a0 Possibly everyone felt the same way he did.\u00a0 But it is equally possibly that some group members felt differently.\u00a0 They might have been willing to speak up if someone else had provided the social proof that it was OK to challenge the leader\u2019s authority.\u00a0 Since no one did, there was no social proof that speaking up was really OK.\u00a0 In this case social proof worked to support everyone\u2019s silence.\u00a0 In your coaching business, social proof, in the form of testimonials for instance, is a major encouragement for potential clients to choose you as their coach.<\/p>\n<p>The principles of persuasion are worth knowing.\u00a0 Get familiar with them and you can use them to good purpose in many aspects of your coaching business, including a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">coaching mastermind<\/span>.\u00a0 And, you are more likely to realize when they are being used to influence you.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Special Bonus<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> \u2013 <\/span><em><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Learn 32 \u2018Guru\u2019 Transformation Techniques when you fill in the form at the top right and click the \u201cWatch The Videos Now\u201d button.
