{"id":28484,"date":"2022-12-28T06:08:31","date_gmt":"2022-12-28T14:08:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/coachestrainingblog.com\/becomeacoach\/?p=28484"},"modified":"2022-12-28T12:09:55","modified_gmt":"2022-12-28T20:09:55","slug":"the-10-hour-coaching-week","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/coachestrainingblog.com\/becomeacoach\/the-10-hour-coaching-week\/","title":{"rendered":"The 10 Hour Coaching Week"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To <a href=\"https:\/\/coachestrainingblog.com\/becomeacoach\/how-to-start-a-coaching-business-16-mistakes-part-one\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>start your coaching business<\/strong><\/a>, you need 10 hours per week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">10 hours is enough time for the \u201ccoaching business four\u201d:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Networking and lead generation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/coachestrainingblog.com\/becomeacoach\/scheduling-more-discovery-sessions-methods\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Scheduling discovery sessions<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Running discovery sessions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Coaching paying clients<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Can you <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">imagine<\/span> 10 hours per week <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">doing those 4 things<\/span>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fact is that <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">most coaches won&#8217;t ever spend even 10 hours<\/span> per week on their coaching business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The TIME excuse.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notice, I didn\u2019t say \u2018time\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/coachestrainingblog.com\/becomeacoach\/the-big-time-lie-that-crushed-my-coaching-business\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Time never stops a new coach<\/strong><\/a> from getting started.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s the EXCUSE that stops them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How can a simple excuse stop so many well-intentioned coaches?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>That excuse goes UNINVESTIGATED.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So instead of letting it stop YOU\u2026 investigate it\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Where might you have <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">a few hours<\/span> in your weekly schedule?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Where are you <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">over-spending your time<\/span> right now?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How much <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">leisure time<\/span> could you forfeit?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you don&#8217;t investigate your \u2018time excuse\u2019, you\u2019ll have no clue how much time you can give to your business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You\u2019ll just know you\u2019re <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">busy<\/span>\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026and you probably won&#8217;t even attempt to put in your 10 hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But with a little investigation, you can usually uncover 10 hours per week to grow your coaching business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Got your 10 hours blocked? Preserved? Guarded?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">divide up the time<\/span> THIS WAY:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>8 hours scheduling discovery sessions<\/strong> (generate leads and contact them)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>2 hours delivering those discovery sessions<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Spend 80% of your time <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">talking to potential clients<\/span> (and offering them class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Invest 20% of your time <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">delivering discovery sessions<\/span> (and inviting those people to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">enroll into paid coaching<\/span> with you).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every coach who does this consistently\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026gets paying clients as a result.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And, as you get more paying clients\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026you\u2019ll be able to finance your transition to full time coach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Get past the time excuse.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Invest the 10 hours consistently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Invest the 10 hours consistently.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reap the rewards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The only remaining issue?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even coaches that get past their time excuse\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026still struggle with managing their time so they can maintain their 10 hour coaching week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let\u2019s solve the most common struggles, one by one:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Getting too fancy, too fast<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">New coaches spend months crafting a detailed <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">business plan<\/span>, designing a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">perfect website<\/span>, or pursuing several multi-year <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">certifications<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All this fancy \u2018todo\u2019 doesn\u2019t matter if you don\u2019t have paying clients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>In fact, coaches sometimes <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">use fancy projects<\/span>\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u2026to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">avoid talking to people<\/span> about coaching.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The problem is\u2026 those CONVERSATIONS are <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">what really gets paying clients<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why waste your time and money getting fancy if you don\u2019t do what it takes to make your business work?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why waste your time and money getting fancy if you don\u2019t do what it takes to make your business work?&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You\u2019re better off putting all that fancy stuff aside to <strong>deliver 100 discovery sessions<\/strong>\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026then, if you still want to \u2018get fancy\u2019, you\u2019ll have enough paying clients to subsidize it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Trying to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">please<\/span>\u2026 everyone<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Coaches give so much of their time to help other people\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026but this can get out of hand due to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u2018people pleaser\u2019 tendencies<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">PLEASERS attract TAKERS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">PLEASERS attract TAKERS.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">PLEASERS attract USERS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019re a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">target<\/span> for the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">takers<\/span> and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">users<\/span>\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026they\u2019ll <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">ask you to do everything for them<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Work against these \u2018pleaser\u2019 tendencies by saying \u201cno\u201d.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">PLEASERS attract USERS.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Going \u201covertime\u201d on coaching sessions<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Going far over your allotted session time overwhelms your clients and fritters away your time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Being too available<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If every client hears <strong><em>\u201cCall me whenever you need me.\u201d<\/em><\/strong>&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026it\u2019s possible that you\u2019ll never get a free moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This \u2018open door\u2019 invitation shows those around you that you don\u2019t value your time\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026so <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">they don\u2019t value it either<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead, <strong>set boundaries<\/strong> around how and when your clients can get access to your valuable time and energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead, <strong>set boundaries<\/strong> around how and when your clients can get access to your valuable time and energy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Scheduling coaching sessions <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">too far apart<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most coaches schedule coaching sessions \u201cwhenever is convenient\u201d for the client.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This causes <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">HUGE time gaps between sessions<\/span>\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026which makes it more tempting to go overtime\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026because you don\u2019t have another session immediately after you finish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This can also cause you to waste ENTIRE mornings, afternoons, or evenings <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">on ONE SESSION<\/span>\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026or WORSE, that one session CANCELS or RESCHEDULES at the last minute, and now that part of the day is a TOTAL LOSS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead, <strong>schedule your sessions in <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">back to back \u2018clusters\u2019<\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You\u2019ll finish sessions on time (because now <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">you have to<\/span>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You\u2019ll get through <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">all your coaching for the week in one or two days<\/span> (leaving the rest of the week free for productive business activities).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Beating yourself up<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019m constantly talking to coaches who beat themselves up mentally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>\u201cI SHOULD have\u2026\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>\u201cI\u2019m so BAD at\u2026\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>\u201cI COULD be so much further along\u2026\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stay away from judging yourself or name calling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Don\u2019t take your mistakes personally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">no upside<\/span>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beating yourself up only bars you from spending time in the very area where you need to improve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let\u2019s say you\u2019re not very confident in your Discovery Sessions\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026so you need to improve them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But you beat yourself up about your bumbling Discovery Sessions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NOW how are you feeling about running another Discovery Session?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lousy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, either you\u2019ll <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">avoid Discovery Sessions completely<\/span>\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026or you\u2019ll <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">delay<\/span> and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">procrastinate<\/span> running your Discovery Sessions <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">to avoid more beatings<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All due to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">the self-imposed resistance you\u2019ve created<\/span> by beating yourself up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of beating yourself up in your weaker areas\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026ask yourself how you could improve, and <strong>intentionally focus on <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">improving tomorrow<\/span>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of beating yourself up in your weaker area\u2026ask yourself how you could improve, and <strong>intentionally focus on <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">improving tomorrow<\/span>.<\/strong>&#8220;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Avoiding what you \u201chate\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Starting a coaching business is a romantic venture where you get to \u201cdo what you love.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This \u201cdo what you love\u201d mindset can <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">delude you<\/span> into thinking that you don\u2019t need to make any <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">sacrifices<\/span> before you have a successful coaching business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the Dean of Master Coach University, Jeffrey Sooey says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>\u201cThe problem with doing what you love is that you may think you\u2019ll never need to do what you HATE as well.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/coachestrainingblog.com\/becomeacoach\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/jts-quote.jpeg\"><img chosen to pursue your coaching business as a worthwhile reality\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026instead of just indulging in the fantasy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So go ahead\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sacrifice some leisure time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sacrifice some family time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sacrifice some \u2018me time\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Use that time for your coaching business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If that sacrifice <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">means something<\/span> to you\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026you\u2019ll be that much more <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">committed<\/span> to your coaching business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Unfinished Project <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Perfectionism<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A lot of coaches don\u2019t complete projects in their coaching business because they are worried that it won\u2019t be \u201cgood enough\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Incomplete websites\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Incomplete videos, books, courses, etc\u2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Incomplete webinars\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026all cluttering up their life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead, <strong>give yourself a solid <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">deadline<\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Don\u2019t respect your own deadlines?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Make your deadline PUBLIC.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For instance: I work with a coach who publishes online courses.
