What if, instead, you WITHHELD Coaching?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It\u2019s counterintuitive<\/span>, but withholding coaching\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2026ATTRACTS MORE CLIENTS.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Can you imagine getting more clients (And getting paid more per client)\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2026because you REFUSED to Coach<\/span>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n It might sound crazy\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2026like I\u2019m asking you to pull a \u2018soup nazi\u2019 on your coaching clients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But withholding coaching is critical<\/span> if you want a successful practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In fact, \u201cwithholding\u201d works in many other industries:<\/p>\n\n\n\n You can\u2019t even get a McDonald\u2019s burger before you pass through the pay window in the drive through.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Whether it\u2019s withholding education, withholding membership, or withholding hamburgers\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2026EVERY product or service is WITHHELD<\/span> from those that don\u2019t pay the fee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And the MOST EXPENSIVE and CHERISHED offerings are withheld, even from WILLING purchasers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There\u2019s no denying the upside of withholding<\/span> the very service you offer the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The point?<\/p>\n\n\n\n The easier<\/span> your coaching is to \u2018get\u2019, the less people want it<\/span> (and the less they\u2019ll pay).<\/p>\n\n\n\n If you\u2019re pushing coaching on people who don\u2019t want it<\/span>\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2026they\u2019re never gonna pay for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2026and scarce<\/span> resources are highly valued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The harder your coaching is to \u2018get\u2019, the more valuable it becomes<\/span>.<\/strong>“<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n Abundant<\/span> resources aren\u2019t valued\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n Bottom line\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2026and low low fees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cBut what about people that want Coaching<\/span>, Jeff?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n You\u2019re not saying that I should withhold Coaching from THEM, are you??\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Yep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Even if a client WANTS your coaching\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2026if you give them more coaching than they want<\/span>\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2026then they won\u2019t want coaching<\/span> from you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Withholding Coaching from clients that actually want coaching\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2026will increase your enrollments and your bottom line<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n By the way\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n They might want HELP\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n They might want CHANGE\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n They might want to solve their PROBLEM, or achieve their GOAL\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2026but that doesn\u2019t mean they want coaching<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Coaches see these common desires\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2026and mistakenly translate them into \u2018that person must want coaching\u2019<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n No.<\/p>\n\n\n\n These people NEED coaching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They don\u2019t WANT coaching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n These people might be OPEN to coaching\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2026but they don\u2019t necessarily have a BURNING DESIRE<\/span> to GET coaching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And just because somebody allows you to coach them doesn\u2019t mean they want coaching<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n BOTTOM LINE: The people you think \u2018want\u2019 coaching\u2026 usually don\u2019t<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And even people that truly DO WANT COACHING aren\u2019t a \u2018sure thing\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Their desire is nuanced<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Their desire is variable<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Their desire for coaching comes and goes<\/span>. Like a fickle lover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Coach these \u2018motivated\u2019 clients too much<\/span>\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2026and eventually they get TIRED of your coaching<\/span>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n That turns into a \u2018cheap client\u2019 at best, or worse\u2026 they\u2019ll quit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But what if you withheld coaching before they enrolled<\/span>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then, since clients always want MORE of what they CAN\u2019T QUITE HAVE<\/span>\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2026they\u2019ll be hungry<\/span> to enroll.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2026which makes their enrollment more likely<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2026which means they\u2019ll pay a higher coaching fee<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Make sense?<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cOK, Jeff, that\u2019s great for NEW CLIENTS\u2026<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2026but what about all those clients I\u2019m already coaching<\/span>?\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI shouldn\u2019t withhold coaching from them, should I?\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n How?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Simple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Give them the coaching they paid for\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2026and don\u2019t give them ANY MORE coaching beyond that<\/span>. Withhold any EXTRA coaching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Give them the coaching they paid for\u2026and don\u2019t give them ANY MORE coaching beyond that<\/span>. Withhold any EXTRA coaching.”<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n I love to coach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I tend to over-coach<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I can\u2019t help it sometimes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I\u2019m passionate about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I have clients that love me and love my Coaching\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2026but when I give them an extra half hour of coaching<\/span>\u2026?<\/p>\n\n\n\n They start to sound a little winded<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They start to sound exasperated<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They start to sound inundated<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And that\u2019s when I know\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2026I gave them more Coaching than I should have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I gave them Coaching they didn\u2019t want<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n As a result\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2026their willingness to stay in coaching?<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2026their willingness to pay high fees?<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2026starts to wane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If I was to continue coaching them \u2018too much\u2019\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2026I\u2019d lose them as a client entirely<\/span>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n That will help your client to maintain a healthy desire for your coaching<\/span>\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2026unless, of course, their program already gives them TOO MUCH Coaching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In that case, your client probably undervalues your coaching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n So what do you do?<\/p>\n\n\n\n You may need to DOWNGRADE that client\u2019s program to better fit their \u2018coaching tolerance\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I do this all the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I\u2019ll start my clients out with 2 solid hours of coaching per month<\/span> (or even more than that)…<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2026but, after 4 to 6 months, I\u2019ve DOWNGRADED them to just 1 hour per month of coaching<\/span> (or less).<\/p>\n\n\n\n They might only have a session every two or three months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Fine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It\u2019s the right fit for them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It helps them to maintain a healthy desire for sessions with me<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sound like I\u2019m short-changing my client<\/strong><\/a>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sound offensive to the ideal of \u2018consistent coaching\u2019?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Think my client is \u2018missing out\u2019?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Maybe you\u2019re right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n![\"Chief](\"https:\/\/coachestrainingblog.com\/becomeacoach\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/NO-COACHING-FOR-YOU-1.gif\")
