The \u2018Downward Spiral\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last week we talked about how language <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">creates all the meaning<\/span> in your client\u2019s life\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026and how those meanings dictate their <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">emotions, actions, and results<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If your client wants to change their life\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026that change starts with their language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your client\u2019s language falls across two simple \u2018spectrums\u2019:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Disempowering \/ Empowering (Negative \/ Positive)<\/li><li>Fantasy \/ Reality (Truth \/ Lie)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If your client&#8217;s language is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">disempowering<\/span>, it\u2019ll cause major <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">limitations<\/span>\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026while if your client&#8217;s language is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">empowering<\/span>, that\u2019s probably going to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">help them emotionally<\/span>\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026empower their actions, and, ultimately, their <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">results<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If your client&#8217;s language is full of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">lies and fantasies<\/span>, they\u2019ll be <a href=\"https:\/\/coachestrainingblog.com\/becomeacoach\/my-wife-hired-a-hitman-to-kill-me-crazy-coaching-session\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>out of sync with reality<\/strong><\/a>\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026while, if their language is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">true and authentic<\/span>, that\u2019ll bring them more <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">in sync with reality<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you were to assign BOTH these attributes to your client\u2019s language\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026all that language would <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">fall somewhere between four extremes<\/span>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Disempowering fantasy<\/li><li>Empowering fantasy<\/li><li>Disempowering reality<\/li><li>Empowering reality<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/coachestrainingblog.com\/becomeacoach\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/unnamed-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" https:\/\/coachestrainingblog.com\/becomeacoach\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/unnamed-1-640x360.jpg 640w, https:\/\/coachestrainingblog.com\/becomeacoach\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/unnamed-1.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each \u2018language quadrant\u2019 has very different attributes and very different consequences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Have you coached a client who <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">speaks disempowering lies<\/span>?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That puts their language in the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">lower left quadrant<\/span>\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The \u2018Downward Spiral\u2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026because this language takes your client in a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">downward spiral of destruction<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Downward Spiral quadrant language is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">hurtful and hopeless<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Have you ever heard a vengeful 5 year old <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">attacking their mother with nasty lies<\/span>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s language from the Downward Spiral quadrant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Downward Spiral quadrant language is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">hurtful and hopeless<\/span>.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Have you ever listened to a distressed \/ miserable friend, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">beating themselves up with self-talk<\/span>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s language from the Downward Spiral quadrant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/coachestrainingblog.com\/becomeacoach\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/unnamed-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" https:\/\/coachestrainingblog.com\/becomeacoach\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/unnamed-2-640x360.jpg 640w, https:\/\/coachestrainingblog.com\/becomeacoach\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/unnamed-2.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Have you ever been put off by someone in a Downward Spiral?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Imagine a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">client talking like that<\/span>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Most coaches want to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">switch to a different client<\/span>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>You shouldn\u2019t think that way.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>It\u2019s just <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">language<\/span>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>You don\u2019t need to switch to a new client.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Instead, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">shift the client\u2019s language<\/span>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>By the way, Downward Spiral language is so <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">ugly<\/span>\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u2026that your client <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">may not share it in their sessions<\/span>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>However, if the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">emotions of the Downward Spiral quadrant<\/span> are present for them\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Worry<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Anger<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Hate<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Sorrow<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Fear<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u2026there\u2019s probably <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">some \u2018silent language<\/span>\u2019 from this quadrant\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u2026hurting your client <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">from the inside-out<\/span>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>So, ask your client <em>\u201cWhat might you be <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">saying to yourself <\/span>that makes you feel that way?\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Pull that hidden language out of them<\/span> to uncover what\u2019s at the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">source<\/span> of their suffering.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>How do you shift that language?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>I\u2019ll get to that in a second. Don\u2019t get ahead of me!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Have you coached a client who <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">speaks empowering truth<\/span>?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>That client\u2019s language belongs in the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">upper right quadrant<\/span>, called\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u2018Generative\u2019 Language<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u2026because it \u2018generates\u2019 better and better realities.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=vP4iY1TtS3s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Martin Luther King\u2019s \u201cI have a dream\u201d speech<\/strong><\/a><strong> was GENERATIVE language.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=NwM6s55no6U\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>John F. Kennedy\u2019s inaugural \u201cAsk not what your country can do for you.\u201d speech<\/strong><\/a><strong> was GENERATIVE language\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u2026and later, he <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=NwM6s55no6U\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>inspired us to put a man on the moon<\/strong><\/a><strong> with generative language.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Declaration of Independence is generative language.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Generative language is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">authentic and empowering<\/span>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Generative language leads humanity forward, always finding deeper connections to what matters most.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Generative language is:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Purposeful<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Proactive<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Optimistic<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Visionary<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Courageous<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Open<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Productive<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Ideally, you\u2019ll <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">guide your client towards the Generative language quadrant<\/span>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The more Generative language your client uses, the more they\u2019ll access transformation wherever they want.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Generative language is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">authentic and empowering<\/span>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>These two quadrants \u2018Downward Spiral\u2019 and \u2018Generative\u2019 are <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">extreme opposites<\/span>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>One <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">creates<\/span>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The other <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">destroys<\/span>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>One is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">conscious and awake<\/span>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The other is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">unconscious and reactionary<\/span>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>But there are <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">two other quadrants<\/span> that are a bit more <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">nuanced<\/span>&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8230;so let\u2019s fill in the cracks.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Have you coached a client who\u2019s <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">language seems empowering, but it\u2019s filled with fantasy<\/span>?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 48%\"><figure class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>That puts their language in the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">upper left quadrant<\/span>, called\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u2018Hype\u2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u2026because <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">it \u2018hypes\u2019 you up, but isn\u2019t real<\/span>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Hype language is full of<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Hope<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Faith<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Possibility<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Grandeur<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>It\u2019s <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">idealistic<\/span>, rose-colored, utopian, starry-eyed, and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">fanciful<\/span>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>But, ultimately, language from the Hype quadrant turns out to be a\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Mirage<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Delusion<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Foolish Misadventure<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Pipe-dream<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>When your client uses Hype language\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u2026it\u2019s <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">positive<\/span>, but usually it\u2019s a lot of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">hot air<\/span>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>When your client uses Hype language\u2026it\u2019s <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">positive<\/span>, but usually it\u2019s a lot of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">hot air<\/span>.<\/strong>&#8220;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Hype language doesn\u2019t usually help your client that much, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">because it\u2019s not grounded in truth<\/span>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Daydreams are enjoyable but they don\u2019t really do anything.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Maybe your client <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">lies to themselves<\/span>, acting like things are great when they really aren\u2019t.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Or, perhaps your client is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">making up a hopeful future<\/span> that will never come true.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Think of Hype as <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">wishful language<\/span>, rather than productive language.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Why<\/span> would your client use language like this?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>It <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">feels good<\/span>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Hype language is<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Hedonistic<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Pollyanna<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Narcissistic \/ Megalomaniacal<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Manic<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Pleasure seeking clients<\/span> will usually indulge in Hype Quadrant language\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u2026but never really get anywhere\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u2026because they won\u2019t deal with <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">reality<\/span>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>That said, I\u2019d much rather coach a client caught up in Hype, than a Downward Spiral\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u2026because <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Hype can open doors<\/span> to positive ideas and feelings.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Hype language IS <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">initially empowering<\/span>\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u2026because it creates ENERGY\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u2026which causes MOVEMENT.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>But Hype based movement is less likely to create real PROGRESS.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>You can move in a circle\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u2026and still go <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">nowhere<\/span>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Finally, have you coached a client who\u2019s <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">language seems accurate, but negative<\/span>?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>That puts their language in the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">lower right quadrant<\/span>\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Language of \u2018Resignation\u2019&#8230;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u2026is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">accurate<\/span>, but <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">forfeits all power to make progress<\/span>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>This language is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">versed in truth<\/span>, but <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">doesn\u2019t empower your client<\/span>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>A Client in the Resignation quadrant is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">like a human computer<\/span>:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>No positive feelings or intentions, but they are factually correct.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Resigned language is<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Skeptical<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Detached<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Cynical\u2026<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u2026which might cause your client to feel <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">detached<\/span> from their LIFE.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>At best, a client caught up in Resigned language is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">stoic<\/span>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>A <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">stone person<\/span> that <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">won\u2019t progress<\/span>\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>won\u2019t grow\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u2026and won\u2019t <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">connect to the rest of the world<\/span>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Resigned clients <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">won\u2019t try anything new<\/span>, because <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">they don\u2019t speak from an empowering context<\/span>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>These clients are <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">stuck<\/span>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Emotionally, they\u2019ll avoid pain, but miss out on any positive emotions as well.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Numb.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Have you ever coached a client that seems to know everything, and yet experiences nothing?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>They\u2019re usually <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">not very inspiring<\/span>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>It\u2019s easy to feel suppressed \/ suffocated in the presence of a client run by Resigned language.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>But, remember\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>It\u2019s just LANGUAGE.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Language can CHANGE.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Now that you\u2019ve <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">identified the quadrant <\/span>your client\u2019s language is centered in\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u2026and you understand the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">consequences<\/span> of that type of language\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u2026what do you do about it?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Simple.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Coach your client to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">shift their language<\/span> towards the Generative quadrant.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>If 100% of your clients were using <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">nothing but Generative language<\/span>\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u2026they would be <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">exploding with possibilities<\/span>, and building new realities in no time.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Generative quadrant is the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">most productive possible space for your client to be<\/span>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Generative language is the ideal combination of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">authenticity<\/span> and an <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">empowering perspective<\/span>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u2026from <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">negative and disempowering<\/span> to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">positive and class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That sounds like she\u2019s in the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Downward Spiral<\/span> quadrant, doesn\u2019t it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What might you say to shift her language up to one of the top quadrants?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Try\u2026 <strong><em>\u201cThat\u2019s a pretty disempowering perspective.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>\u201cIs that <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">helpful <\/span>to you?\u201c<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>\u201cWhat would be <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">a more empowering way to talk<\/span> about that?\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At a minimum, your client will shift to Hype, or potentially her language might move to Generative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She\u2019s probably not going to allow her language to dwell in the Downward Spiral after your gentle challenge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>\u201cIt seems like I make lots of mistakes with my son.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>You can use the same coaching to move her language up to the top quadrants.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What if your client\u2019s language is in the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">two left side quadrants<\/span> (<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Hype<\/span> or <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Downward Spiral<\/span>)?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Shift that language over to the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">right quadrants<\/span>\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u2026from <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">fantasy and lies<\/span> to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">reality and Hype quadrant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps she\u2019s just trying to be positive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps she\u2019s lying to herself to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">make herself feel better<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Regardless, what might you say to help identify that?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What could you say to help her shift towards reality and authenticity?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Try\u2026 <strong><em>\u201cIs that really <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">true<\/span>?\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>\u201cCan you possibly <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">know<\/span> that?\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>\u201cWhat\u2019s <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">really<\/span> true?\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>\u201cWhat are the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">facts<\/span>?\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notice those questions are <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">gently provoking exploration<\/span> and a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">shift towards reality<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now let\u2019s go back to that Downward Spiral quadrant example, when your client says&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>\u201cI\u2019m a terrible mother.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>\u201cI\u2019m the worst mother ever.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes, your client <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">won\u2019t be willing<\/span> to shift their disempowering language to be more empowering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In that case, your only option is to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">shift the language towards REALITY<\/span>\u2026 to the right side quadrants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those same questions can nudge even the most disempowered client towards reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But don\u2019t be surprised if a client doesn\u2019t immediately leap to Generative Language the first moment you use this gentle coaching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why not?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because your client\u2019s lousy language quality <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">has an impact<\/span> on their:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Emotions<\/li><li>Actions<\/li><li>Results<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When your client\u2019s <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">emotions are down<\/span>\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026they <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">aren\u2019t going to FEEL like<\/span> using Generative language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When your client\u2019s <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">actions aren\u2019t empowering<\/span>\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026then <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">empowering language<\/span> right off the bat might <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">seem a bit out of place<\/span> (not to mention that it might not be authentic for them).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If your client\u2019s <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">results are lousy<\/span>\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026Generative language <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">might not make much sense<\/span>, as your client is focused on all the horrible results around them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ultimately, your client has to choose to embrace your invitation to shift and improve their language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Not every client will follow your lead.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some clients will continue to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">indulge<\/span> in a Downward Spiral.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some clients will stay in a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">daydream<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If they do, change your approach from gentle questions to more <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">direct language<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What\u2019s more, sometimes your client\u2019s language is a sign of <a href=\"https:\/\/coachestrainingblog.com\/becomeacoach\/deep-coaching-tutorial\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>something deeper<\/strong><\/a>\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026some <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">issue<\/span> that you\u2019ll need to discover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finding that issue reveals <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">what\u2019s really at the root<\/span> of your client\u2019s language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But sometimes the most disempowering language is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">just its own independent pattern<\/span>\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026not a sign of some deep-seated wound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe your client fell into <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">adopting disempowering language from a friend<\/span> or family member.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe their language is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">all they need to change<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In that case\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Transform the
