the Coaching Agreement in Four Steps"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Have you ever noticed that you can talk for an hour with a client\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8230;and get nowhere?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After too many of those sessions, most coaches don\u2019t need to wonder why a client doesn&#8217;t continue coaching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Is it because\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>They\u2019re not getting value?<\/li><li>They\u2019re frustrated with you (or the coaching process)?<\/li><li>They\u2019re just not \u2018ready\u2019 for real progress?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My coach and I were talking about these \u2018coaching horror stories\u2019\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sessions that meandered around complaints\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sessions where our feedback was attacked or rejected\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sessions that ended in confusion\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>So I hope you know\u2026 you\u2019re not alone.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>We\u2019ve all coached quite a few \u2018dead end\u2019 coaching sessions.<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those coaching sessions can be devastating&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>to you as the coach.<\/li><li>to the client and their goals.<\/li><li>to the coaching relationship itself.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yesterday I was on a coaching call with one of my clients\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8230;and we started going down \u2018the rabbit hole\u2019\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I wanted to jump in and give coaching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I wanted to tell my client what to do to \u2018fix it all\u2019!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I wanted to help them overcome their ignorance and limitations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8230;but I stopped myself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Because I didn\u2019t even know <\/strong><strong>what she wanted<\/strong><strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because I had no real clue about the impact our conversation was going to have on her goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whatever I did was almost guaranteed to fall flat\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8230;considering that my client and I hadn\u2019t even agreed on the point of our session.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ICF (International Coach Federation) calls this process&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Establishing the Coaching Agreement<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Which means\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8230;before you go down that rabbit hole\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8230;and give advice or coaching\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8230;make sure you are on the same page as your client&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8230;not just at the surface level\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026but at a meaningful level that\u2019s VALUABLE to your client.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><a class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And even though my client and I got off to a shaky start\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8230;I lead her through a quick process\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8230;that got us on the same page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And (once we were on the same page)\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8230;the coaching session was MAGICAL.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So magical\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8230;that an hour later she texted me a video\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8230;of her singing along with the car radio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I can still hear her now, belting out, <strong><em>\u201cI am strong\u2026<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>&#8230;I am invincible&#8230;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>&#8230;I am woman\u2026<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>&#8230;hear me roar!\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>With a caption \u201cThinking of you.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That was priceless, for HER as much as for ME.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>But <\/strong><strong>none of that would\u2019ve been possible without setting up a powerful AGREEMENT<\/strong><strong> between us for that coaching session\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8230;and EVERY session prior to that one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>So, how do you set up the agreement for a coaching session?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>STEP ONE: Exploration: Understand what your client wants.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This step is pretty simple\u2026 just ASK THEM:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><em>\u201cWhat result would you like to get out of this session?\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/li><li><strong><em>\u201cWhat would be most valuable for you to work on today?\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once you have an idea of what your client wants, you\u2019re ready for the next step\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>STEP TWO: Motivation: Understand the motivations behind your client\u2019s desire.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is important to clarify what\u2019s driving your client\u2019s wants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why do they want it in the first place?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some questions you might ask include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><em>\u201cWhat is important about achieving that result?\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/li><li><strong><em>\u201cWhat does that mean to you?\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/li><li><strong><em>\u201cHow will your life be different if we work on this?\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You want to make sure that you drill down to discover your client\u2019s motivations at the deepest level\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Generally, all your client\u2019s motives boil down to <\/strong><strong>an attempt to meet their \u201csurvival needs\u201d<\/strong><strong>:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Certainty<\/strong> (safety, security, comfort &#8211; In modern society this is usually measured in terms of health or finances).<\/li><li><strong>Significance<\/strong> (feeling special, unique, worthy, valuable, or needed).<\/li><li><strong>Variety<\/strong> (novelty, adventure, or growth\u2026 usually a measure of enjoying life)<\/li><li><strong>Love and Connection<\/strong> (relationship, or a feeling of oneness with others)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Survival needs are the drive behind everything your client wants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even if you don\u2019t talk about it explicitly with your client, keep an eye on the deeper motivations behind class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>STEP THREE: Agree on a measurable outcome.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unless both YOU and YOUR CLIENT are clear on the destination\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8230;the odds are that you\u2019ll miss the mark in that coaching session.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This step helps create clarity between coach and client about what you\u2019re actually partnering to achieve during the session.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ask your client:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><em>\u201cAt the end of the session, what would you like to walk away with?\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/li><li><strong><em>\u201cWhat do you hope to achieve at the end of this session?\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>STEP FOUR: Agree on measurements of success.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Make your outcomes objective (if possible)&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8230;so you and your client are clear about your progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Make your outcomes objective (if possible)&#8230;so you and your client are clear about your progress.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Without this step you won\u2019t know when to stay the course, or shift gears in the session.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ask your client:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><em>\u201cHow will you know that you have achieved what you want to accomplish in this session?\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/li><li><strong><em>\u201cWhat will be a reasonable sign that we\u2019ve gotten there?\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/li><li><strong><em>\u201cWhat will that look \/ feel like?\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/li><li><strong><em>\u201cWhere would you like to be by the end of this session?\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These four steps lead to a clear agreement between you and your client around the entire premise of that coaching session:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The goal<\/li><li>The \u2018why\u2019<\/li><li>The process<\/li><li>The proof<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That agreement will set you up for a collaborative partnership &#8211; powerfully pulling your client towards success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The lack of that agreement leaves your session vulnerable to a malaise of complaints, confusion, and wandering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Getting the coaching agreement ahead of diving into each session will empower your clients\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8230;to determine their own outcomes, putting them in the driver\u2019s seat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Even if the rest of your coaching in that session is a flop\u2026<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8230;and all you did was help your client get clear about what they want\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8230;they STILL win!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Because <\/strong><strong>your client has all the answers within themselves<\/strong><strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even if YOU don\u2019t have all the answers, when your client is clear\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8230;they often come up with the answer on their own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your client will magically move toward a solution\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8230;all because you:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Provided an opportunity for self-reflection.<\/li><li>Gave them the power to decide what is most valuable.<\/li><li>Inspired confidence by creating a positive expectation of progress.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Taking a few minutes to establish the coaching agreement\u2026<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8230;creates a blank canvas\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8230;for your client to explore their dreams\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8230;and create a plan to achieve them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And when you empower your clients in this way\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8230;they love you (and your coaching) all the more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Colette &#8220;Coaching Agreement&#8221;
