What\u2019s the best way to sell coaching with integrity?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You have to believe in the product.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I used to sell coaching by \u201cpaying it forward\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coaching gave me my own personal breakthroughs\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

…and, in turn, I\u2019d tell everyone how great coaching was\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

…that coaching could make breakthroughs possible for them as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But I started to have doubts\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

…when my husband and I divorced after 19 years of marriage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was supposed to be a coach\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

…but I couldn\u2019t even save my own marriage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why would a coach have doubts about the power of coaching\u2026<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

…just because their life isn\u2019t perfect?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most coaches believe they should be living proof that coaching works<\/span>\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

…proof that you can get any result you want…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

…that all things are possible with enough coaching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You have to believe in the product.<\/span>“<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The problem with that ideal?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coaches end up thinking that their life reflects on how good (or bad) coaching is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If they\u2019re broken, then coaching must be broken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, if your life isn\u2019t so great right now\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

…the conversation becomes \u201cCoaching doesn\u2019t work for me.\u201d.<\/span>..<\/p>\n\n\n\n

…which gets generalized into \u201cCoaching just doesn\u2019t work.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

When it happened to me\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I couldn\u2019t face myself or my clients\u2026<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

…let alone new clients who had their own doubts about coaching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was afraid to enroll clients into coaching\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

…because I doubted the power of coaching<\/span>\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

…and its ability to transform lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I thought \u201cThis coaching thing doesn\u2019t help the way I thought it does.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But, then I realized my mistake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I had put coaching high on a pedestal<\/span>…<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

…expecting that it would make everything in my life perfect<\/span>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

And when it didn\u2019t do that\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

…I crucified it<\/span>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

So before I could start enrolling clients with integrity again\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I had to sell myself on the value of coaching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I decided to recapture my faith in coaching…<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

…by proving to myself that it could transform my own life first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So I got some coaching\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My coach told me \u201clife is 50\/50, half positive and half negative. How does that apply to your marriage<\/span>?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I responded, \u201cSome of my marriage was positive\u2026 but some was negative. And then it ended.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

My coach said, \u201cThat sounds a lot like life to me<\/span>.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I realized that a lot of my thoughts centered on my marriage (and my life) being perfect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Next, my coach said, \u201cIt\u2019s normal to want to avoid the negative feelings in life. But if you avoid them, you stop feeling altogether.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCan you accept and include the negative thoughts with the positive<\/span>?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was judging myself and my marriage harshly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was trying to avoid these negative thoughts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I had to be willing to explore all my negative feelings.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Finally, my coach helped me learn how to process those feelings and move past them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those breakthroughs allowed me to have a good relationship with my ex\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

…in fact, we shared a beer while discussing plans for our son\u2019s education last week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How did all this impact my ability to sell coaching with integrity?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I realized that I had to take \u201cthe good with the bad\u201d in coaching, too<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I realized that I could treat coaching like marriage…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

…just because it\u2019s not all good doesn\u2019t mean it doesn\u2019t work.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

So I stopped judging my coaching so harshly, just like I stopped the judgment in my marriage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because I was willing to put my faith in the power of coaching\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

…it changed how I thought about my relationship with my ex…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

…which changed how I treated him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And now, when there are challenges between me and my x-husband…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

…I put on my coach hat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And, as a result, he tells me how lucky he is to have me as his ex.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Selling coaching with integrity relies on staying grounded in what coaching makes possible.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
